Legal TX resident for 6 months?

How do they qualify the 6 month residency thing?

I've had a residence in TX since last July, I've resided full time in TX since August. However, due to my grueling business travel schedule, I didn't get around to registering my car or get my DL until spring. To be safe, should I wait 6 months after my DL before applying for a CHL application or is my apartment lease proof positive that I've been a resident?

If you "intend" to make Texas your state of residence, that's good enough. Typically, DPS wants to see a Texas Drivers License, but an apartment lease my be sufficient. I haven't run into this before, but one of the other instructors may have more information.

I was in a similar situation. When I applied for my CHL I still had a temporary Texas DL. The only issue was that I needed a photo ID [used my Passport] to get my signature notarized. In fact my DL didn't even show up on the DPS computer so the CHL Trooper doing my background check called to me fax a copy. Nobody asked to see a lease or utility bills. I got my CHL in 63 days.

Excellent. Thanks fellas, I'll go ahead and get the ball rolling. Coming from the peoples republic of NJ, I'm very cautious to dot my i's and cross my t's. Up there, they are just looking for any excuse to deny you your rights.

They are MUCH better down here, but some things to be careful of:

If you've ever been arrested (fingerprinted and photographed) You'll need to get information from the arresting agency (the state, city, county, etc that arrested you) stating what you were arrested for, and proof you weren't convicted of a felony. There's more information on doing this all over this forum, and people explain it better than me.

Get a class where all the steps are covered, like photos, fingerprints, etc. There are quite a few silly things that are absolutely required, and doing it yourself, you're sure to miss a step. We've got great instructors on here, and the rest of us will love to recommend to you a "full service" class.

The only reasons you can be denied are:
1) conviction of a felony, ever
2) conviction of a class A or B misdemeanor (or crimes that would have been in Texas, in other places) for 5 years after date of conviction
3) being younger than 21 (there are some exceptions if youre millitary)
4) Chemically dependant (Basically arrested for something involving alcohol or drugs more than twice within a 10 year period I think. Being an alcoholic is ok as long as you havn't been arrested for crimes realted to alcohol within the above timeframe.)
5) Not qualified to purchase a handgun under federal laws from a FFL
6) In default for taxes or other money owed to the state of Texas
7) Under a restraining order
8) you lied on your application

Under Texas law, if you dont have any of these disqualifiers, you MUST be issued a license.

Great advice. If you give us an idea of where you are living some one can provide a reference for an instructor.

I'm in Frisco. So far I've found the Bullet Trap in Plano or Texas Training Academy in Carrollton. I'm going to be traveling and going on vacation the next couple of weeks so I was hoping to go through class sometime around the end of the month if not next. Any other school recommendations would be appreciated. Was hopping for a full service class.

No problem on the qualifications. The 6 month residency was the thing I was most worried about.
