Dove hunting in Texas?

Hey yall, can anyone recommend a good place to go dove hunting in texas? my dad and brother and me are going this September and would like to be able to hit something lol.

We last went to Victoria and the birds were flying so high nothing could touch them. We had at least 12 guys firing as they flocked down and we maybe winged one, but it kept on flying.

In general, you want area's that have lot's of fields with sunflower or grain. I've been to Lufkin and it is a very forested area, which is not prime dove habitat. The further west you go, more into the plains/hill country area the better. We have so many dove in the DFW city area, it's sickening. I have some fields right by my house and the dove are in there by the thousand. They are really proliferating without any hunting pressure inside the city limit. I'm sure if you look in your Sunday classified ads, you are likely too see tons of ads for dove leases. Also check into your local mom & pop country store, and I'm sure someone would have posted some ads for leases.

Also know that after opening day, the dove get very skittish and start flying higher. We generally go opening weekend, and then wait a couple of weeks for them to calm down and go back. We always get plenty of shooting in.

We had a pair nest in the rain gutter just above our back door. The mama dove raised three broods of chicks as fast as we could watch. After the third brood I was tired of all the dove doo by the back door and shooed her off and took the nest out. Another pair is on the garage and they are still shoving them out. I think they are on the fourth brood. They are worse than rabbits.

Lots more fun to hunt too. Even Mrs. Anygun likes them wrapped in bacon cooked over mesquite coals.

I hunt with a group every year North of Sweetwater. As a matter of fact our bunch is gathering at my place tomorrow night for our monthly "supper club" get together to cook the last 40-50 doves from last year, 6 pheasants one of our guys shot in Kansas last year, and some chicken breasts for the women (that don't appreciate "real" birds).

I take the dove breast and put a glob of cream cheese in the cavity, with a slice of jalapeno pepper, season with a bit of seasoned salt and cayenne and black pepper, and then wrap in bacon. Good stuff over the grill.

Go to the TPWS website and check out the public hunting section. In addition to your license you will need the Public Lands permit. Along with this you will receive a couple of paper guides that will show all available lands in the state along with any restrictions. If you can't afford a season lease or plan to hunt only once or twice this may be a viable option. Areas close to major cities can get quite crowded so it pays to scout early and arrice well before shooting times. Otherwise there are many day hunting opportunities with local guides and outfitters. Check out your local classified ads. Best of luck and good shooting.

good advice, we usually go on friends and families land. We last went hunting in victoria at my cousins place and his father in law cooked up what had to be at least 150 pounds of boiled shrimp for the after party. It rocked, even if we didn't get a single kill lol.

and the 150 pounds is not an exaggeration...

West Texas is the place to go for Dove hunting. Look online for the Abilene or Lubbock newpaper websites and start watching the ad's for dove leases.

just finished putting away the last 54 doves, stuffed with cream cheese, jalapeno, and wrapped in bacon, and a few grilled chicken breasts for the womenfolk, and a few sausages on the grill......and a few cold drinks

I'd loved to take credit for it, but I'm afraid there's a few thousand other outdoor cooks ahead of me on this one. I just add a bit of extra seasoning...

stuff the breastbone cavity with a glob (technical measurement there...and that's Standard American Glob and NOT Metric Glob) of cream cheese,covered with a nice appropriate sized slice of jalapeno, wrap with bacon, toothpick it all together, sprinkle with seasoned salt black pepper and cayenne pepper....grill over open fire. Last night we started the open pit with charcoal, then loaded it woth mesquite wood for cooking...

by the way, you can pocket cut chicken breasts and thick pork chops/pork steaks and stuff the same way....it's become a staple meat dish around my house.

I use a similar recipe. I inject the breast halves with cajun butter then do the cheese/jalapeno thing then wrap in bacon. I put the finished packages on the smoker using hicory. Smoke at 200 degrees for 3 to 3 and a half hours (until medium rare). Usually there is a brisket and some sausage on the pit as well. These little bites go well with an adult beverage while tending the pit overnight. You can also grill over charcoal as a kabob using rosemary as the skewer.

The summer I got out of high school my family went to New Mexico and I brought along my female history teacher and one of my female friends. well, they are both liberal weenies. Me and some of the guys went out shooting a 12 gauge at an old 30 pack and put a lot of holes in it, so I walked in, threw it on the table where they were gossiping and went "cook it up woman."

I got some mean looks.....

I was at a sport show in Mcallen Texas a couple weeks ago,I was approached by a man who asked if I like to hunt...I am disabled and use a wheelchair for longer distances I may walk or extended periods of standing like over 5 minutes,I told him I use to but it's hard to get around in my condition upon which he told me he represents an organization that takes handicap hunters out hunting on private land that is donated,everything is furnished and all you have to do is call and make reservations .This sounds like I may be able to get out and do a little hunting after the last 6 years
