Left work at 11:00 last night on my GSXR. Sittin in the turn lane waiting to get on the highway, I see a car pull up behind me and I don't like the headlight profile. Sure enough when the light turns green and we turn I get lit up by Grapevine PD. I turned on my hazards and pulled over on the on ramp. Visor up, bike turned off, kickstand down. Officer comes up to my "passenger" side and asks for license and insurance. Hand him my DL and CHL along with my insurance paper. He tells me the reason he pulled me over was he ran my plates at the light to make sure it was not stolen and it came back that my registration was expired . During my move I must have misplaced my renewal form and forgot about it. He takes a look at plastic, asks if I was carrying (not allowed to carry at work, to work, or on company property ) Hands all back to me and tells me to take care of it, and to be safe. Thanked officer and merged into traffic. Entire stop was just short of pleasant and entirely professional and courteous.

Actually on the ride alongs I've done with Irving PD they run motorcycle plate mainly to make sure inspection/reg is current and to make sure they aren't stolen bikes. It makes me smile inside knowing that they are being proactive in the pursuit of bike thieves.

I cant understand a company founded in these great United States that would deny you a constitutional right........maybe thier British?...and biter?,....hahahaha
Ya it sucked and really was one of the reasons I left them. My new one encourages me to carry...it's an armored car company, but they support 24/7 carry all the way

Aren't officers supposed to have probable cause or at least satisfy some legal standard before running a plate? Besides, MC plates have a yearly sticker. He should have been able to tell whether or not the plate was valid.
No, police are not required to have any reason to run a plate. It is not considered a search by the courts. The logic is that the state owns the database of information, so you can have no real expectation of privacy in data owned by someone else, and a license plate is in public view, so you cannot have a realistic expectation of privacy in something that is clearly viewable to the public.
I disagree since I think I do have a reasonable expectation of rpivacy int he data I was forced to turn over for tax collection purposes to the state (that is all registration is, another tax you must pay) and I was forced to display my tax receipt (the plate). If they can search the database at any time, and I am forced to display the plate, it would seem like compelled consent to me.
But the American people has bought into the concept of driving is a privilege and not a right, and that it is alright to require these licenses, without ever asking themselves why the government wanted to have them in the first place.

I am glad to hear that I am not the only one who thinks that driving is a right. IMO, most people have been brainwashed by the schools and motor vehicle departments into thinking that driving is a privilege. I think that the right to travel is as basic a right as self defense and freedom of speech. I have often wondered how people would have reacted years ago if they were told that they had to get a riders license, register their horse, get insurance and get a safety inspection sticker before they could ride their horse on a public road.

My plate is "kinda" hidden under my rear tail (06 GSXR 600) so the registration sticker may or may not be clearly visible with its whopping 2 1/2 X 1" self. And even if it wasn't expired, who is to say that it was my plate. It is held on by 2 wing nuts.

When I bought my bike the dealership put this stupid plastic license plate frame with of course their logo on it. What ticked me off was that it covered too much of my plate to be legal, and the put the inspection sticker on the dang thing. SO I couldn't just take it off. I was forced to use it. So what I did was cut out the it inspection sticker plastic and all and glued it to another part of my bike that face the rear.

Thats nothing new. I have been riding longer than I can remember and they have always kept an eye on bikes more so than cars. That goes for any Police department. Its just been in the news more so these days since Dallas morning News did another article about the Thursday night Sonic Meet up. That use to be a nice place for a few of us to meet and have a nice ride.

That is because y'all are Crazy!!! :p WIldscar get that dang bike up and running so me, you and Parker can take off somewhere!
I work in Garland and while heading back after lunch I was heading home (day off) and the other guys were riding back to work, a Garland LEO got behind me and I could tell he was after me as I casually cahnged lanes and he followed with sharp lane changes. I followed the guys back to the shop (HD) and pulled in front of an 18 wheeler (not too close [abbreviated profanity deleted] a call for a bike, but the LEO car couldn't follow), to escape as my Reg has been out since March :p. Good thing I know a great paralegal who mainly handles traffic cases :) (Dallas and surrounding areas). If anyone needs him, he offers discounts when I send him business (shamless plug for him... Nah! lol) and often times will give advice on what to do free of charge.
