Graduation ?

Greetings--

HS Graduation is being held in an ISD"s football staduim.

Is this considered an off limit carry location because its an ISD property ? because its an "event "?

I would not carry in this situation. While the ceremony is not in a building proper, it is a school sponsored event and (IANAL) IMHO meets the burden of exclusion for a CHL holder lawfully carrying.

It would be OK to park and leave your firearm in the vehicle, but a defense to prosecution for a UCW would seem tenuous at best.

Again, IANAL, but I would think that the stadium would be considered a premises during the ceremony in this case.

I agree, I think it would be illegal to carry your gun to a school function such as graduation. At least I would not carry mine past the car. Take care.

Someone correct me but no matter where your at as far as the building, if it is a school function it is considered an extension of the school building or Premises? So if graduation was being held on a Yacht in the middle of a lake it would still be off limits? At least that is what I have gathered over the last few monyhs..... TX? Oh! yeah! this is my own view, no Lawyer skills here!

Jim, that is my understanding of it. School function=no gun. As always, I reserve the right to be wrong!

I also have to agree with LT...this is completely under protest.

With as much media attention that is given to school shootings, including the planned ones that are never carried out...schools seem like the ideal place to have your weapon!

One would think. The logic escapes me on that one too. I would like to hear the thought process behind not being able to carry on school Premises. I know it;s not funny but I swear I almost busted out laughing when I was told the "Post Office" was off limits. I thought to myself that's the one place I wanted to carry the most.

That's what I thought-- no carry at ISD functions of any kind.-- so it stayed in the car. Baytown PD was there searching bags/purses and had wands at the entrance. Not a bad idea--can't hurt.

I guess they were concerned about noisemakers too *shaking head*. ISD security swooped down on several folks with noisemakers in the stands.

Since when do the police get to make unwarranted searches as a condition of entrance?

I get mad enough when they use security officers to search, because they have police standing right beside them in case anything is found. But at least they're pretending to avoid unwarranted searches by police.

But if Baytown is using actual police officers to conduct general searches of people coming in, that's flagrantly unconstitutional!

I too was unarmed in the stands with the kimber in my truck for my cousin's graduation. Kinda scary too because Navasota's graduation crowd is sketchy at best.

Is a High School Prom a school function? If so is the building it is held in considered an extension of the school buildings? We have a local convention center, no 30-06 or 51% signs. I went to a social function having nothing to do with any school or school function. Next door in the same building, was the local High School Prom. Was I in violation of the law?

I believe you would have been if you entered the area where the prom was held. I THINK your are ok in other parts of the building. Maybe someone who is more knowledgable will confir or refute this.

You were fine. It was not school property and you were not present at the school function.
