What do you not like about CHL & carrying?

Be it a need for different clothing to changing your daily routine, what is it that you don't like about having a CHL and concealed carry?

I'm not trying to stir up a hornet's nest. I'm just trying to see what I should expect when I get to that point.

Edit: I just put my name on the list for a CHL class on June 24.

Of course I have only had my License for a few days. :)

Clothing was not a big change, I just went to larger (baggy) shirts and carry my Beagle in a Fobus Paddle Holster at about 4 O'clock.

SO far I really have no complaints, it has been a very smooth change over to a carry style. I actually forget it's even there durring the day!

Well, I don't especially like giving all my info to the DPS and being in the database.

Carrying around a couple extra pounds of weight is a difference.

Have to be a little more aware when I go places to make sure I'm legal.

I tend to be more aware in general. Cause if something goes down I can do something about it.

This is one part that concerns me. I try not to have a rigid schedule outside my work schedule. If I feel like going to the grocery or Walmart or visit a friend on a whim, I do so. How do you guys work 30.06 places into your schedule? Do you leave your handgun in your car?

What about printing? Can you get arrested for printing?

Also, have you ever dropped your gun in a restroom because you forgot it was there? Back in my active duty USAF days (before BDUs), when would tuck our fatigue shirts into our fatigue pants. We also tucked the bill of our hats behind us into the waist of our pants when we were indoors. Sure enough someone forgets their hat is there and drops their drawers to do a #2. Splash! Right into the toilet.

Mostly with 30.06 I just check entrances carefully before I go in.

If I know a location is prohibited I plan accordingly. Usually that means leaving my carry piece in the car. Although disarming while maintaining concealment can get interesting at times. My worst time was taking off my USP45 fullsize and it's IWB holster in my car in front of a busload of tourists... Had a similar time in a school parking lot. Basically I use a towel to hold the holster and cover the sidearm at the same time. So I may look funny, but I keep the thing concealed.

I've never had too much of a problem with a gun in the bathroom. But I've heard plenty of stories.

I'd say the discomfort in carrying a pistol all day long. I've never really found a good holster I like. I want something that is easy on/easy off, as I sit at a desk most of the day. I'm currently carrying either my G26 or my Kel-Tec P-11. I'm using Fobus holsters for both, and I'm satisfied with them for now. I carry a Kel-Tek P-3AT front pocket in a leather holster all day at work and to church on Sundays.

I'd be more enthusiastic about the 26 and the P-11 if I could carry them under a decent sports coat, but who wants to wear a sports coat in Texas in the summer (with it buttoned to avoid accidentally showing the weapon.

Removing my weapon to go into a US post office. Man that is a real pain. I use the post office 3-5 times every week.

30.06 is really not a biggie for moi. I try to stay out of places that post correctly.

I like to share a nice bottle of wine with Mrs. Anygun when dining out and since there is no defined limit, this is an issue with me. I travel a lot. In Pennsylvania, you can pack and drink, period. No big deal. Lots of states allow it.

Printing is not an issue. The sheeple don't pay any attention. Watch out for wind gusts blowing your cover garments. If you follow the same course as a lot of packers, you will wind up with lots of belts, holsters and other accessories in drawers before you settle on what works best.

I have migrated to smaller size alloy frame 1911's for comfort. mil-spec 1911's are not comfortable for me.

Work is an issue. I work in the refining/chemical industry, so a lot of the time I can't pack due to work.

Travelling with handguns is a snap once you learn the nuances of TSA and airlines.

Are you a member of the NRA, TSRA, GOA, USCCA, or other Second Amendment support oranizations? Supporting the ones that support you is a huge part of packing. The organizations along with this forum and your brothers and sisters who share your beliefs is a great resource. I am certain others will learn from your experiences as well.

I generally avoid anywhere that posts 30.06 and if I stumble across a business that does, I'll just go somewhere else. That isn't really a problem in my area since I'm only aware of a couple that do. As for other places excluded by law, I plan ahead before going there.

Every instructor I know has interpreted this to mean that simply "printing" will not get you in trouble, although it is still not a good idea. Most people who are not themselves CHL holders or Peace Officers will never have a clue even if you are "printing".

My biggest beef with carrying is wardrobe. I have a difficult time getting clothing I'm comfortable with. Adding a weapon further complicates things.

But here's the relevant statute:
§ 46.035. UNLAWFUL CARRYING OF HANDGUN BY LICENSE HOLDER.
(a) A license holder commits an offense if the license holder carries a handgun on or about the license holder's person under the authority of Subchapter H, Chapter 411, Government Code, and intentionally fails to conceal the handgun.


Accidental printing is not a criminal offense.

I am not a small man and it is the summer time that I have the most problems with. I wear mainly dress clothes and I hate COATS. When I am in casual clothes I usually wear a regular shirt not button nor tucked and I do not like leaving my shirt tail untucked. I am still afraid of my dad (who is in heaven) slapping me for looking sloppy

I think some of the problems of carrying come down to shortcutting on equipment. Get a good holster. Get a good belt. These two may very well cost you $150-200. If you don't, it'll never be remotely comfortable, and you'll find yourself readjusting the rig.
