Tell on myself

#1

Post by OverEasy »

Sunday afternoon we decided to "go to town" for a bite to eat and to gas up the car.

I thought I would use IWB carry for the prcatice.

I put on an undershirt to keep the goodies off my bare skin. I hooked the IWB on the waist band and threaded the belt thru the clips and then put on a baggy "T" shirt to cover it all up. Then I did a pirouette in front of the bathroom mirror just to make sure.

Got the keys, ID, folding knife, OC and the cellphone and we were off.

We had lunch, gassed up the car and went home.

I walked in the bedroom, pulled up my "T" shirt to unholster.

PANIC!!

The holster was EMPTY. OH NOOOO, Where is my Glock?

Right on the night stand next to the bed!!

I got all rigged up, dressed and everthing and FORGOT to holster my gun.

I quickly gave my wife a lecture about how important it is for her to carry every single time we leave the house. And not to say "Oh I don't need mine, I'm with you".

All that time I was thinking, "gee I'm getting used to this IWB rig, it's so light and comfortable and it's not poking me".

Yes, I'm over 50... Will it get worse? :o

The other week I walked out the front door all loaded up. Cell, knife, OC, 2 spare mags... and an empty holster...

Fortunately I noticed and went back for that critical missing component...

Happens to the best of us.

Could be the other way around ;-) I carried open carry for years when I was LEO. I have on several occasions (because I was taught to TUCK the shirt tail in) dressed, tucked shirt in, strapped on OWB holster and walked out of the door  I have always discovered it before getting to far in public or the wife has. I will probably be the one who is arrested and loses everything!

Ok, you could have left that part of the story out.

I've come close to leaving home with an empty holster. I always take inventory before I open the door though. It's a good habit.

Well, this is me right now... but I know it, my XD-9 is in my vehicle... locked up! My employer does not allow carry. My holster is on, my shirt is a shirt that is designed (square cut) to be worn out. When I get off work, my weapon will be holstered.

Holster, for me, is becomming like my license. It goes absolutely everywhere, if my weapon has to stay behind (work place, 30.06 or 51%), the holster does not.

As long as we're telling on ourselves....

(but I still feel DUMB !!!)

We drove to Lubbock Thursday to keep an appointment for another catscan on my heart. Needed to get clearance from the heart doctor before I can have some badly needed leg surgery. I knew that I could not carry in the imaging center or the hospital where the doctor's office is as there are 30.06 signs clearly posted, so when we arrived there, I put my gun and holster in the center console of the car.

When we finished the medical appointments, we decided to eat at a restaurant just one block from the hospital.

After a nice meal, we walked outside to the parking lot. It was mid afternoon and our car was the only vehicle in the lot, parked in the first handicapped space in front of the building. As we left the restaurant, we both noticed a black male about 40 years of age coming around the corner of the building in our direction, probably about 15 yards away. He was walking fast, talking to himself in a loud voice while waving his left hand and arm. His right hand was not visible because of a sweatshirt he was carrying over his forearm. His overall dirty and ragged appearance immediately triggered all my internal alarms.

I walk with the aid of a cane and am not too fast because of my bad leg, so my wife was slightly ahead of me as she started to go around to her side of the car. I stopped for a second to switch the cane to my left hand in order to bring my right hand up to have it in close proximity of my holster as the man continued right towards me. The lapse in thinking that I referred to above was that I had not put my weapon on in that one block drive between the hospital and restaurant. It only took me a second to realize that I did not have my gun on me, remembering that it was still in the center console of the car. By that time the man was only a few steps from me, so I put the metal cane back in my right hand, thinking it would at least be something I could use for defense if I had to.

I was no more than 10 feet from the building and only a few feet from the drivers side of my car. Just as the man reached me, I stepped back so I kept my back to the building and keeping him between the car and myself. He was still talking to himself while staring at me, eyeball to eyeball contact. He passed me by and as he got to the front of my car, he noticed there was a large drainage ditch there filled with water. He stopped, then turned back towards me. He seemed to notice the cane and the way I was holding it, he then turned to walk in front of the car and off through the parking lot. By that time, my wife was already back around the rear of the car and at my side.

Was the man a danger to us, or just off his rocker a little ? I sure don't know..... but what I do know without a shadow of doubt is that I was not in a position to do much about it if he did have bad intentions. A lapse in thinking on my part could have been devastating.

There might be a positive side to all this though.... after it was all over, my wife told me that she thinks it is time for her to take the CHL course. Our 21 year old son already has his CHL, and I have been suggesting to her for a while that she take the course and get her CHL also. She has always shrugged it off by saying that she would normally always be with me and if I had my gun on, why should she need one ?

This incident seems to have convinced her that I'm getting so feeble minded that she might have to depend on herself, LOL !!

A cane can be used very effectively...

Since we are telling stories.

I was on the PD and had taken a prisoner to the city jail. We had little lockers at the watch commanders desk to secure our firearm before going into the jail It was procedure to hang the ring with the key to the locker on your holster.

I had just come downstairs from the jail, and I inserted my key into the gun locker when another officer came in with a prisoner that was still fighting. I ran over and assisted him in getting the guy secured.

I then walked out of the building and got in my unit. The police station then was in a bad area of town known as "the cut". I made a traffic stop right away, exited my vehicle and went to unsnap my holster as I approached the driver and  my holster was empty.

Now this was a bad area, regular shootings, wanted felons, drugs...all of it.

I quickly told the driver that I just wanted to remind him that his taillight was out, and he was free to go. Guess where I went next.

One of these Oh-no threads ran shortly after I joined the forum. So far this has not happened to me but the one thing it has taught me is when I leave the house I pat both sides once then leave them alone unless you need it. Above is w/ a grin. This one is w/ greatest thanks for all I have learned here.

There was a bit of pucker factor, but no bathroom was necessary.

It's not funny but I bet the look on your face was priceless when you reached for your holster and found no one home.

txinvestigator,

I never had that happen while I was LE, but did have another amusing story.....

When I was a motor officer, I stopped a fellow for speeding. Business looking guy, shirt pocket with pocket protector and pens, etc. Halfway through his ticket, my pen ran out of ink. I did not have a spare.

Walked up to his drivers window, pointed to his pens and asked if I could borrow one for a minute. Without thinking, he handed me one.

I finished the ticket, asked him to sign. He had a very surprised look on his face, then wanted to know if I had used his pen to write him a ticket ? Trying hard to keep a straight face, I replied yes, and thanks !
