Just out of curiosity...
Why in the world do people think they have to stick things like pens and shotgun shells and all other manner of things into the trigger guard of a gun when they are photographing it? Is there something I'm missing? What is it they're aiming to achieve?

I think they're trying to get it to stand up rather than just laying flat on a surface so as to provide more of a 3D effect.

This places the gun in a better position to be photographed. It gives it the third demension which is lost if you lay it flat. It also has to do with the angle the gun and other things are being photographed. At least that's why I do it that way.
Adversity doesn't build character....it reveals it.
