Hi,

Did the scoring for the shooting portion of the test change recently? When I took it years ago and when I did the renewal last year, hits in the 7 ring and hits on the non-white part of the target both counted toward the score.

I remember the scoring like this:
8,9 and 10 rings = 5 points
7 ring = 4 points
on target, outside rings = 3 points

I spoke to someone who took the shooing practical recently and their instructor only counted hits within the 8 ring. So their scoring was 8,9 and 10 rings = 5 points

Did the scoring for the test changed recently?

My wife and I took the CHL Class in late February of this year and it was scored just like quoted.

Took my renewal 2 weeks ago and the scoring was as quoted above.

This is interesting. Is the scoring for passing / failing something that each instructor can decide on themselves? This instructor who had the scoring I listed above wouldn't even left the students keep their targets. I wonder why he scored the tests the way he did? The people who failed were told they can retake the shooting part of the test at a later date for $50.

The PEOPLE who failed, as in plural? I have a hard time believing more than 1 out of maybe 30 people could fail that test, unless they had nonfunctional weapons to qualify with. I've gone through two of these classes in the last year, (one for my chl and one for my wife's to make her more comfortable) and no one failed, even the people who admitted they'd never fired a gun in their life. One guy's gun jammed at least 10 times and he still passed.

I hope I'm wrong and you just had some really inept people taking the class with you, but it sounds like this instructor may be trying to gouge some more cash out of a few naive people. $50 to retake the test? Both instructors I saw said they'd let anyone who failed retake the test at their next class for no charge if they just showed up for the shooting portion.

Sounds shady. I agree sounds like he is trying to make a few bucks. A call to DPS might be in order.

I swear to God Statler and Waldorf from the Muppets show were in my class, qualifying with a semi auto (each never shot them before, own revolvers) and they still managed to pass with flying colors.

To the best of my recollection, the scoring "was" a part of the proficiency to obtain the CHL...The score was what you submitted to Austin...

It is now a "PASS" or "FAIL" noted by the instructor on one of the affidavits filed in your packet sent to Austin...

Now I have not seen anyone submit a failed score (in the past) or a "FAIL" packet to Austin, ever...

The most important thing in my (and many others) opinion, is safety...If you handle the firearm safely enough, and you can hit the target at the ranges specified in the course of fire the state requires you take...

If there are difficiencies, then that is half the fun of getting someone some more range time to correct those issues...Training should never end after you shoot 50 rounds, get a slap on the back and a piece of plastic that says "You Can!"

Charging an additional $50 to retest in this situation is not right.

Well, if the 5-point hits get the score up to passing by themselves, there's no need to count the others. OTOH, if he's failing people without counting their 3 and 4 point hits, DPS should be notified.

That was my first thought.

The first time I took the test, I got a 249. It turned out the woman in the next lane - the one who showed up with a LOADED pistol she had no idea how to operate - missed her target entirely several times. One of her errant shots hit my target about 18" below my group.

She still passed.
