Thoughts on a spare magazine holster

#1

Post by frazzled »

What is everyone's thoughts on spare magazine holsters? I'm debating getting one for a single stack .45 magazine. Ideally it would be black and look similar to something that could be mistaken for a cell phone case.

Any thoughts or ideas on this puppy?

I picked up an Uncle Mike's brand single mag holder in black Kydex.

You can wear it IWB or OWB.

It's got kind of a skinny clip that looks a little wimpy, like it might break, but mine
has now been in service for a few months under stressful twisting clothing situation
and it's a champ.

When I wear it IWB, I position the small part that shows next to my black pants'
beltloop and slide my real cellphone's holster up close to the belt loop as well.
No one notices, even when I'm wearing a tucked-in shirt. Just poof up your shirt
a little bit to cover the clip and it's now completely concealed.

Don't know what your location is. I got mine at Cheaper than Dirt gunshop in Fort Worth
at the intersection of I-35W and Loop 820.

Cellphone Schmellphone. I use regular 1911 magazine holders, IWB, made by D.M. Bullard. They work great, and they don't really cost any more than any other holders.

The theory is that I don't want to show that I am carrying around a .45 magazine, just another item next to the cellphone.

The kydex item looks interesting. I had not seen IWB's previously.

I'm getting something very similar custom made for my Glock. My mag holder will be horizontally (the vertical ones dig into my side too badly), and have a button so that it can be closed just like a knife case. http://littlebearholsters.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; is doing this for me for about $30 with shipping and all. I wear one of their custom holsters daily and am very happy with the work... the mag holder should be great, too.

I'll post some pics once it comes in next week if you're interested in going with something similar.
Carrying since 02/06/2009.

I actually use a spare cell phone case to carry mags. It covers the mag, keeping the mag from digging into my side and attaches to my belt easily. Works better than any other mag carrier I have.

Interesting. Is there any exposed portion [abbreviated profanity deleted] the mag that could be recognized as such?

I would imagine it depends on the cell phone case and the magazine. You may have to shop around. There are a few manufacturers who make sideways-oriented mag holders. Galco I know makes one. But I'm sure you have a cost-to-performance-to-concealability-to-comfort ratio working here. ;-)

I have a leather mag carrier. It easily hides under my shirt.

I use a regular kydex mag pouch if I have my shirt untucked and a Tucker Gun Leather IWB mag pouch if I need to tuck the shirt in. After much moving around I have finally found a comfortable place for it at about 3:30 (I'm a lefty). It works great and I would recommend Tucker Gun Leather to anyone interested. The only catch is that you must be prepared to wait a while. He has a tremendous back log. Having said that, everything I have gotten from him, holster and mag pouches, have been well worth the wait.

Frazzled,

I just wanted to add that I am very pleased with my IWB spare mag holster. I carry a Kimber Pro CDP-II for my CC. I bought from DM Bullard here in Azle, TX. Quality, craftsmanship, and not a long waiting time (this was over 6 months ago I purchased and it only took 10 days to my door).

http://www.dmbullardleather.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; (update: he is apparently using another site to sell from...it will redirect you)

(scroll down past the OWB duo carry)

One thing I have been looking at is his "Texas Conceal Carry" model. It seems to marry the idea of one holster serving duty for both firearm and mag.

DeSantis Magpacker. I bought this little pocket mag holder from someone on this forum a couple of years ago and it has served me well. I use it about 99% of the time.
