Moving out of state

Question. I just recently applied for my CHL. Waiting on the paperwork.

Since I'm graduating there is the possibility I get a job outside of the state of Texas.

My question is....is that CHL valid in that state if I'm a resident there? I know about reciprocity and whatnot...But since its a Texas CHL and say I'm a resident of....Louisiana, can I change my permenant address to be my Louisiana address on a Texas CHL?

I hope my question made sense... Basically all I'm trying to figure out is: If i move and live out of state...do I need to get a License for that state? Or will my Texas one cover me there as long as I take the necessary steps to keep it legal (change of address and whatnot).

Yes. Same as any other change of address.

That's a different question. It depends whether that state honors a Texas CHL and if they honor non-resident licenses.

For example, Florida honors a Texas CHL for Texas residents visiting Florida but doesn't honor a Texas CHL for Arizona residents visiting Florida, and doesn't honor a Texas CHL held by a Florida resident. On the other hand, Louisiana seems to honor a Texas CHL for residents of any state.

Even if where you are moving to will honer your TX CHL, I would imagine that you will want to eventually get a CHL for whatever state you're living in. Just as you can use a driver's license to drive in any state on a temporary basis, you still need to eventually get a license from your new state.

Lets say I work as a contractor and I move (along with my home, family etc) to another state. (Lets just for sake of discussion say it is Tennessee). I change address on my Texas CHL, then I decide to take the TN CHL. Does my Texas CHL carry any weight in terms of 'fast pathing'?

Probably not.

No. One of the bits of advice you'll occasionally read on this forum to to get another state's license to cover you for delays in getting your Texas CHL renewed, as well as gain reciprocity with another state or two.

* IIRC, the Feds consider the move permanent if it's longer than 12 consecutive months unless you're military.
* Most states expect you to register your vehicles and get a new DL with them after 30 days.
* States with income tax take it from your first money earned in their state.

Texas CHL at an out of state residence probably depends on the definition of permanent move vs temporary.
