New; Need advice

Post by {TEX}Hawaii 99 »

I am an active duty service member currently stationed outside of Texas. I have a Texas DL and my LES lists Texas as my state of residence. Am I going to have any trouble obtaining my CHL? Will they mail it to my Georgia residence?

I am planning on visiting Texas this summer for about a week and want to complete the CHL process while I am there. I have seen the online registration site and viewed some of the threads here. The whole process seems much more difficult than my current state's process (Georgia). I am not sure really where to begin and what I need to do / accomplish before I make my trip. What things can I do to set myself up for success and minimize time spent on CHL while I am in Texas as the main purpose of my trip will be to visit family?

Can anyone recommend a CHL instructor in the area of Huntsville, TX? Don't mind going as far south as the Woodlands if needed. Perfer something off of I-45.

Any other tips would be greatly appreciated.
15 JUL 09 - CHL Class
16 JUL 09 - Packet Mailed
13 AUG 09 - PIN Received
10 SEP 09 - Plastic In Hand!!!!

I think for your first question, you won't have any problem obtaining the CHL--Texas issues to Non-Residents as well as residents. I *think* it would be fine to have it mailed to your Georgia residence. As an active duty service member, you have some additional advantages (I think they cut the price, and in certain circumstances you are exempted from the live-fire portions of the test). You can check this at the Texas DPS website, or by calling them.

As far as an instructor, I know that they run CHL Classes every Saturday at Thunder Gun Range in Conroe, and it was on a first-come-first-served basis when i took mine in January.

As far as "pre-work" you could pre-register, but I really don't think it's worth it...in fact, in your situation, it might create more issues that it fixes. Jesse (at Thunder) will have the packet you need, takes fingerprints, and passport photos. When you leave the class Saturday evening, you're ready to mail the packet and let the processing time begin.
