Re: April 2009 Applications
if they really wanted to ,
they could have the application complete and plastic in the mail in only a few days
after they get back the background check .

Re: April 2009 Applications
Well...the DPS called me today (Yes...THEY called me) and told me that they are waiting on Galveston County background check for both myself and the good lady. She told me that she had contacted the Galveston folks and told them to expedite both. Apparently Galveston have taken on more people to process the huge increase in CHL demand. She said that since Ike the demand has really exploded in Galveston, Brazoria and Harris counties. I asked her if she thought the comparable increase in crime could be a reason!
Anyway she said she was going to check everyday and that she expected the background check in about a week.
Amazing! and all I did was email them asking for a hearing and carbon copying the Steven McCraw! But I am sure it is all just coincidence.

I agree. I am sure the back ground check is different from the check done when one goes in to buy a gun, but how long does it really take to do a back ground check on any one person? From start to finish.
You have supplied your name, address, work place, TDL, finger prints, everything about you, including a picture. All they must do is scan your prints and type in your name.
How far do they go back? Until I was born?
Once this is completed, they could print the license right there, slip it in an envelope, and mail it. Why send it off to some outsource to have this done? Many states print your drivers license right in front of you when you renew them. So why not Texas on the CHL?

Re: April 2009 Applications
Or... here's a random thought... they could print your license while waiting on the background check. then it would be ready to go in the mail as soon as the check is done!
Think about it. They already have your $140 application fee. I'm pretty sure it can't possibly cost that much to print the plastic. And how many denials do they get, anyway??? I am betting it is not that large a percentage!
So, maybe we should submit a process plan to help them out. (Since apparently, they either don't have one, or it isn't working!)
1. Open the application, extract the money. (oh wait, they already have that part down pat!)
2. Check for completeness.
3. If complete, PRINT THE PLASTIC. If not, notify the applicant.
4. Send the background request.
5. Get the results.
6. Send the license to applicant, or the letter of denial.
How hard can this be???

Crossfire, that's actually a pretty good idea! It would speed up processing time a little, cut down on the wait time for the applicant, and generally clean up a cluttered desk or filing system a whole lot.

Re: April 2009 Applications
Weekly call to the DPS today around 12, same song 42nd verse Waiting on Harris County Background Check. Was not in a very good humor, so I decided to write an e-mail to Rick Perry. Received response from his staff within 45 minutes. 2 hours after that the DPS called me to say they had located my completed BG check and my licenses was on the way to the printers and I should have in my hands within 10 days. Things that make you go Hmmmm...

Wow! Can you post whatever magical combination of words you sent to the gov, so that I may send the same ones, hopefully getting the same result? That's great! Congratulations!
IANAL, YMMV, ITEOTWAWKI and all that.

Re: April 2009 Applications
I think enough people have already contacted their State Representatives and the Governor's office that some Legislators are beginning to hear the voices of voters. And if you think about, that's not a bad outcome.
