Statistically it's safer to fight back than submit, and even safer if you fight back with a weapon.

One of the best reasons to get your CHL and arm yourself. To the criminal, life is cheap, and it means nothing to them to kill someone.

I don't know that the no resistance parts holds up in this case.. I don't know the details but the article says

"the would-be robber struggled with Corbo and his wife Emma Macdonald and then shots were fired."

Yeah, I guess there was a struggle at some point, but they first retreated (ran away) and were rewarded for that by being shot. Not sure how the struggle started, but you're right, there was a struggle.
