First CHL outting

#1

Post by coog83 »

Howdy ya'll. My name is Rhett, and I'm new to CHL, though I've lurked around the board for quite some time.

So I got my CHL in hand yesterday, strapped on my Galco belt and Taurus 709 Slim in my homemade Don Hume-Style IWB holster and set out for an afternoon in town. I didn't go to Wal-Mart, but did make my way to the bank, which really made me nervous, Target, Academy, Pearl Vision and the convenience store. It was quite different than I imagined. Being very nervous about printing, I was in khakis and a Columbia Hawaiian shirt, printed with tuna fish that are wearing sun glasses.(yes, goofy, but effective.) After getting home and assessing the situation, I realized that there was nobody staring at me any more than usual. A 27 year old suburbanite, balding guy with glasses in a Corolla doesn't really draw much attention as a menacing character here in Tomball. I think I'm growing more comfortable with the idea of CC, but I'm still conscious of having a gun on my person. However, I suppose I SHOULD remain conscious of it, as that is the whole point. I'm already paranoid of my surroundings any way and always have carried a quick open lockblade pocket knife anyway. I just wish I could carry at work and to my night classes at University of Houston. It seems like they announce about one or two armed robbery reports via email per month on campus. Over the summer, there were six that they announced. At least I only have six classes left after this semester.

Anyway, I plan on contributing more on the main board as time goes by, but I just wanted to introduce myself to the community.

Welcome Rhett. Don't worry about your anxiety, it passes quickly as carrying becomes a "natural" part of your daily routine. I sympathize with your work and night school plight; we really need to get the parking lot and campus carry bills passed next time.

I attended UH in early 1990s and know exactly what you mean about crime in that area. That, plus working nights in Pasadena later, are what convinced me to buy a handgun and then get a CHL.

Anyway, glad you're here. Lots of great info on this site.

Welcome aboard! There were "things" going on at the U of H campus back in the early 70's. It's not located in the most wonderful part of Houston. But, my wife and I both survived. Just be alert, especially in the parking lots.

USA1, judging by the pictures of your Wally Walk..........my apologies, my friend, I almost said I didn't notice the bulge at your hip because the bulge of your waist concealed it.......but that would have been rude....

It's a kind of the pot calling the kettle type thing....my wife said I needed to get in shape, and just wouldn't listen when I tried to tell her that ROUND is a shape..... :biggrinjester:

My wife also said something to the effect that my first attempt at concealment looked like a tennis ball stuck to a bowling ball....... :headscratch

In discussing scenarios, I mentioned hiding behind the car. She said we're NOT buying a bigger car!!!

I wish she wouldn't beat around the bush and just get to the point...... :totap:

Without a sense of humor in the world, all would be lost..... :thumbs2: :smilelol5:

My wife took a picture of me that appeared out of focus. I just told her I was using fuzzy logic while she was shooting.....

Anytime, amigo!! Despite our attempts at humor from time to time, a world about which we obviously know very little, there is truly an astounding amount of information and assistance available in here. Please feel free to ignore the Court Jesters when appropriate. (Now guys, I didn't name any names.......) :biggrinjester:
