It will make their job harder and maybe give you enough time to arm yourself (if you aren't already) and to try and call 911. They'll also make a lot of noise as well trying to force the door.

Right, i may forego the shotty for another handgun and a small safe/lockbox instead. If she gets her CHL, we wont have to worry too much about the safe in the home as she could keep her gun in her car in a lockbox like i have my my car.

She can do that without a CHL.

Also, if you choose a handgun, it's a lot easier to hide in the house if you want to do that. You can put it inside a stuffed animal or something.

Personally, I would not forgo the devastating power of the shotgun.

If she doesn't shoot and doesn't have the fortitude for it, then she doesn't need a gun.
Until she uses and is comfortable with firearms, she needs mace or something like that.

It doesn't take a whole lot of training to learn how to use a gun, The rules safety rules are simple and shooting at personal defense ranges and acuracy isn't that hard. While good combat training is always a plus, the basics are easily learned at a range with someone reasonably knowledgeable. This isn't rocket science or even driving a car.

You don't have as much control of your environment in an apartment as a house that you own, but do you have or can you install a peephole?

Ok ladies and gentlemen, you all have hammers (guns) so every problem looks like a nail to you.

Don't get me wrong, I love guns. I love ammo. I especially love the combination of the two along with training. But the best answer to the immediate problem of needing a deterrent to someone kicking in your door WHETHER ANYONE IS AT HOME OR NOT is this:



A dog will bark at the door any time someone knocks, and usually requires no training to do so.
A dog will usually attempt to protect his "pack" AKA family/owners and, again, usually requires no training to do so.
I gave Moses a Kimber, but dogs don't really need guns considering they don't have thumbs or index fingers.

Beside being pets and family members, my three dogs are deterrents to anyone breaking into my home and stealing my guns or harming an un-armed family member when I'm not there to protect them.

Dogs. An awesome creation of God that bonds to and protects man like no other of the millions of species of animals on this planet. Crazy, ain't it? Until and unless your better half gets training and a suitable firearm, get a good dog from one of your local rescue organizations and sleep with peace of mind. Even a little chap who can't do much more than bark will run off all but the most determined of home invaders.

Shooting and fighting for your life with a gun are very very different things. I have never experienced tunnel vision or auditory exclusion
while studying rocket science.

I tend to agree with some other posters, get her a youth model pump shotgun, thoroughly teach her how to shoot it, and sleep better at night. I travel occasionally and taught my wife, and we both sleep better.

Didn't you just disable your fix? If she keeps the gun in the car, then she STILL doesn't have a means of defense in the house. Or did I miss something?

Also, on the dog front... I have a dog, but... they're a LONG way from the cure-all. For one, my guns have never defecated, urinated, or vomitted in my house, nor even shed hair for that matter. (MY dog hasn't either yet, but he mostly stays outside.) They don't require feeding twice a day. No worm medicine or vet visits. And they won't swap teams if the bad guy has a piece of food. I acknowledge that a gun's no good if she's opposed to it. I still think a gun in a minimally trained person's hand is a lot better than a surrender to the BG. I know it *could* turn bad, but I'd take the odds with the armed option. She does need to go to the range and learn to shoot, but I think the odds turn in her favor at that point, even without combat-style or other advanced training. More training is of course better, but... some is good.

She would only lock her handgun in her car while at work. She would of course have it with her while in the house.
