school carry / event

Hey everyone, I have a quick question about what is considered school event/location.

I'm a teacher that recently attended a staff development course at a hotel. There are no kids, only teachers. Would it be legal to carry to something like that or would that be considered a school event? I guess it is a school related activity, but I wasn't on school grounds and no kids around and the hotel wasn't posted 30.06.

This seemed like a gray area for me, so for the record I did not carry, but felt naked without my piece. Better safe than sorry, but I just wanted to see what all you instructors out there thought.

Any feedback would be nice.

If only they'd just let the good guys carry where ever we wanted.

I'm not extremley versed in the laws like some people around here, but I would say the spirit or intent of the law against guns on school campus is to portect the students. Seeing as this is a off site meeting and no kids are present, I would personally carry. I would compare it to my current job. We have a no weapons policy, but if we had an offiste meeting sponsered by the company and it was legal to carry at the event, I would carry.

Charles Cotton has given his opinion stating that School Functions, even ones involving children, outside of school property are NOT dis-qualifiers for carry.

Based on that, and the fact that it is a hotel in which plenty of other people would be staying, oblivious to any sort of 'school' thing going on, I would carry without a second thought.

I remember that thread, but even if he were a participant? D.R.T. wasn't a passerby like discussed in the thread. He was involved in the event. I thought the law was clear that guns were prohibited at a school event unless they were needed for the event. I'll go back and read through that thread again.

It may be against employer policy, in which he could be subject to termination, but not illegal.

Since the school is not the owner of the hotel, it does not have the authority to grant permission as allowed under the law, so therefore it cannot be denied by default.

I see that the entire section, 46.03, deals with school property. This makes sense, but he also states that there is no case law on this.

Thanks for the responses...sounds kind of like a gray area. I guess concealed is concealed...but when you career is on the line maybe erring on the side of caution makes the best sense...I always tell my wife, if I ever get shot up at something like this then she better make a big court case on my behalf to help out future CHL'ers. Some day we may be able to always be good guys instead on only in certain places. Thanks again!
