Very interesting. Some of you money people might know the answer to this, but I wonder how much sales tax would have to go up to replace the property tax? We wouldn't be able to totally get rid of property taxes, though. They'd still be there for schools right?

I guess that was intended sarcastically? Medina is seeking the GOP nomination.

She certainly looks like a libertarian compared to the other candidates, and IMHO that's what has been the death of the GOP: big-government "conservatives". The heart of the GOP has traditionally been a platform of small government, individual liberty, economic freedom, and a hands-off approach to other countries' internal affairs. The "new breed" have it exactly reversed.

No no. Not sarcasm at all. In one of the youtube videos, I believe it was down with the Federal Reserve petition speech, there was a guy standing behind her the entire time with a Libertarian Party poster. He was standing 4 maybe 5 feet behind her.

That's where I got that impression. Thanks for clarifying. :tiphat:

Debra worked as a member of Ron Paul's campaign team and has been highly recommended by the man himself.

Unless Paul endorses someone else (unlikely) I'll probably be voting for her. As much as I like Rick Perry, and there is much about him to like, I think Debra would be even better for this state.

TAF, thanks so much for posting the Ron Paul link. Coming from Ron Paul is highly favorable.

But reading the comments by other posters is even more eye opening. You owe it to yourself to watch the youtube post in one of the comments. "If you're interested in actually learning what she DID say at that rally...watch the full speech."

It is in regards to the speech made at Texas Sovereignty or Secession Rally recorded on August 29, 2009 at Austin, Texas . It's 7:24 long, but it is very interesting. Please watch it.

Edit to add: Please also watch(if you can) Larry Kilgore's speech made the same day. I cannot in good conscience cast my vote for someone who embraces this ideology.

I've seen her speech, and it is part of the reason I support her. I believe in voluntarism, the philosophical position that the only legitimate interactions between and among people are those freely assented to by all parties concerned. If the people of Texas choose to disassociate themselves from a formal union with the rest of the states, then it should be free to do so.

To be polite, thats just nuts. That issue was decided by the case of Lee vs. Grant. Dissolution is not an option. The Union will not be divided.

I'm chuckling over this, because had the British won the Revolutionary War, I suppose you'd be citing the case of "King George III vs. Washington."

Might maketh not right, friend. :tiphat: We are guaranteed by God the right to associate (or not) with whomever we choose.

You maybe, but the State of Texas is Not granted the right. I restate, anyone who thinks Texas has the right to go secess is not thinking clearly, or more precisely likely pandering for votes from whatever forum they are in. I'll just assume her actual statements are not in accord with either of these and that she's a strong proponent of state's rights, which is always cool.

I AM the State, hombre! And so are you. The state is nothing more than the individuals who comprise it. I think if you look at it from this angle you might understand what's in the mind of people who you disagree with.

You secede. I and the rest of the normal citizens will hold your coat. Don't let the door hit your keister on the way out, because we sure aren't going to wherever you think you're going. Seceding from the US would do nothing. The survivors would soon be subject to the laws of Mexico. The Federal Government is not going to permit that. We, the populace, are not going to permit that. Those who would try enforce a secession can't win an election, and will be wiped out as terrorists, and rightly so.

Lets get back to the real world shall we? Does she really espouse such nonsense?

OK folks, we have been down this road before and we do NOT discuss secession on this forum. :nono:

Hey, even Rick Perry said that Texas could secede and leave the Union. Does Medina and Perry truly support secession? Of course not! Why are they threatening it? For political leverage, that's why. If they convince enough people (and it doesn't even have to be a majority) that Texas can do so, then it would give them political power in Washington. If Washington doesn't pay attention and give some concessions to Texas, there could be trouble. And at the end of the day, it is the search for power that any politician runs for public office. Perry and Medina's secession comments are a power play only. I seriously doubt that they really mean it. In other words, they're threatening secession for concessions. Great power play, I take my hat off to their ploys. :tiphat:

I like Rick Perry and even voted for him, but it seems like Medina is what the Republican party used to be; smal government, low taxes, constitutional liberties, etc. Libertarians support what the Republicans used to support. If Medina and Ron Paul get the nominations, it would save the Republican party. Medina is a HIspanic last name. If she can speak Spanish and mobilize the Hispanic vote, she'd be a shoe-in. And Ron Paul really needs to get a Black female running mate. He should start the nomination process with a black female running mate. If we conservatives lose another round of elections, we can kiss our 2nd amendment rights and the Republican party goodbye....

P.S. I'm sending off a check tomorrow to her campaign... and I invite you to do the same.
