Houston Mayor To Run for TX Gov

I have heard for several months now that Mayor Bill White was leaving his post as Houston Mayor due to higher aspirations of running for the Governor of Texas. Well, it appears that he will make his intentions known officially tomorrow (Friday).

The Dallas Boring News has this article to confirm the rumors, but I heard on the radio this evening that the announcement will come tomorrow.

I don't think that he'll succeed, but he's probably the best chance the Democratic Party has for making Texas a two party state again. He ran for Mayor of Houston as a moderate, and was considered by both Dems and Repubs as a good mayor for the first two years of his mayoral career. But the last few years have been geared more toward grooming himself for his announcement tomorrow, and less about his mayoral resposibilities. IMO, Kay Bailey has a better chance than Mayor White does, but it will be an interesting race.

Those are hard issues for many folks to get behind. I don't know about in Houston but outside Houston the city sounds out of control and scary. I think it would be hard for a candidate to take responsibility fot that city and have the rest of the state cheer him on.

I thought a man in east Texas was talking about throwing in his hat as a Democrat. I haven't heard anything lately.

White was a member of Bloomberg's Mayors Against Illegal Guns until relatively recently. I'm sure he dropped out to run for the U.S. Senate, now Governor. He will do well in Houston, but not in Harris County. At this point, his biggest problem is no name-recognition outside of Harris County, but wait until the Republicans open up on him and pro-gun groups start speaking out. I wouldn't be surprised if he turns in an A-rated NRA/TSRA Questionnaire; he'll say anything.

Correct. And he first indicated, many months ago, he would run for the U.S. Senate. Now he decides he'll try for Texas Governor, instead.

I live in unincorporated Harris County, so have never been able to vote against Bill White as mayor of Houston, though Houston's mayor has a huge effect on Harris and several surounding counties. But I can assure you I will never vote for him now that he's running for state/federal office. His history of Second Amendment and immigration action are two of the strongest reasons.

That would surprise me. I haven't found many folks in TX that have much good to say about her these days. She was certainly much more of a conservative voice when she was elected to the senate way back when. I don't discount her efforts as of late, but I don't believe she has enough fight left in her to be a strong TX Governor. But...time will tell.

Kay wont win the primary. Maybe in a normal election year but you can have sat in Washington for 20 years in this current political landscape and beat Perry.

White in this current political landscape has almost zero chance. He is far left, Democrats have not held a state wide seat since 1993, and 2010 is not going to be the year for that to change. If New Jersey voted in a Republican Governor it would be a cold cold day before Texas does the opposite next year and votes in a Democrat Governor.

Perry will win the primary and general.

This is another one I feel I am voting against instead of for. I'm against Perry keeping his hand in the till a minute longer. I'm hoping Kay H would be a better choice just because she can't coast the first few years and could actually do something to benefit the state. My wish list is for a Democrat. Odds are growing but still very limited for that to happen. I always feel a little cheated when I have to go the least of the evils. Still- its nice to have a choice.

I've checked their stances on "issues" and I don't see anything to get excited about.

I'm amazed at how many folks have never heard of Debra Medina, especially here on the CHL forums. She's not a career politician, so I don't have a voting record to hold her accountable to. However, she is the chair of the Republican Party of Wharton County and was a big part of Campaign for Liberty before announcing her candidacy. Her biggest platform is the right to private property and arms. From her website:

"Protect gun ownership: Protecting freedom requires that the people be well armed. Government cannot protect us from violence, we must defend ourselves. Texans must not compromise and must not surrender their right to keep and bear arms. We must not only nullify federal laws that threaten that right but encourage citizens to be, as Madison encouraged, “trained to arms, as that is the best and most natural defense of a free country.”"

I heard her speak at a Tea Party in Seguin Saturday morning when discussing 2A issues (right after Sheriff Richard Mack), to quote:

"I'm not carrying today, but I hope a whole bunch of you are."

I really want to like Debra Medina, but she really hasn't steeped out and made herself known. While not a career politician she hasn't hasn't really distinguished herself or accomplished anything either. I've dragged through her web site, and I see little inspiring, and near as I can tell she hasn't even served as a councilman or school board member. The truth is I would be perfectly happy with Perry if it wasn't for trying to stick us with that Trans Texas Corridor which is so wrong on so many counts.

I've worked with Farouk Shammi and all I can say is that if we have to be stuck with a Democrat ...
