I ordered mine on a Friday...
I ordered mine on a Friday, and it arrived the following Wednesday. I understand that all things DPS do not happen at the same speed for all customers however, so you may want to allow a little more time than that.

It could just be me, but when I read the following quote from dfwgun.com, it lead me to believe that the applications were not provided. It may be old info or as stated just my interpretation. Sorry if I was wrong. I think (from what I have read) that it used to be that you would have to order the packets from the state, but now they allow Instructors to have a supply on hand.
So I ordered one...it looks as if I should no longer worry...as I will try to be there this saturday...and you have the applications. :DIt is suggested that you have your application materials before enrolling in the class, but we don't require it. To receive your packet from the state, simply complete and mail this form. (Adobe Acrobat reader required. Get it here.) We have the application packet request forms at the range as well. You must have your own set of application materials, as they are serialized and duplicates are not allowed.
I think "you must have your own set of application materials" is a poorly worded way of pointing out that you can't make photocopies. Every student has to have their own numbered application.
That application is available from DFW, or students may optionally order their own from DPS, so that they can work on it before taking the class.

I am glad you pointed that out. Having nothing to do with the website, I seldom look at it. I will notify our webmaster.JJ99SS wrote:It could just be me, but when I read the following quote from dfwgun.com, it lead me to believe that the applications were not provided. I got a question along these lines. I will be taking my class from a range that specifically states that they do not provide the packet. So how do I get it from the DPS? Do I fill out the forms online and pay the $140 and then they mail it to me, or what?

That is exactly what you do. You will usually get your package in the mail in about a week.
Before you take that class though, think about this... if you go to the class without your packet in hand then you will be left to fill out the fingerprint cards, photo card, and affidavits on your own. No one will check your packet for accuracy or completeness.
Do you really want to do that?

I don't really understand what you mean. Why would I not bring the packet to class??? They specifically say that we need to have the packet but must get it from the DPS first. So when I get there, we fill out all the necessary paperwork together and they say that they will verify it and even organize it in the proper mannner. All Fingerprint, photos, and noterizations are done there as well. I don't really see a down side.
After the class is done, since I have already paid the $140 online for the packet, will I be sending any money with it when it goes back to Austin? Will they know that I have paid it since I have the packet.

Sorry, kauboy, I misread your question. I thought you were taking the class this weekend, in which case you would not have your packet before you attended the class.
So, yes, the DPS will know you have already paid. You will receive an application already filled out with the information you gave them online. They will also send you the fingerprint cards, photo card, and affidavits.
All you do is fill out the rest in class, add your TR-100 (provided by your instructor) and send it all back to DPS.
Enjoy your class and learn lots!
