McKinney CHL

#1

Post by Keith »

New to the area and was wondering if any other McKinney or close to residents want to get together and do some shooting or just grab a coffee. Wanting to find local gun shops/Ranges as im sure there are more. I only know of the Bullet Trap and Elm Fork range at this time. Thanks for any info.

I'm not terribly fond of Bullet Trap and haven't been out to Elm Fork, but there are two good ranges you should try that my husband and I frequent:
Garland Gun Range is an outdoor range with friendly staff. It'll cost you $10 for a lifetime range card and another $10 every time you go shooting. Hearing/eye protection will cost you $2 each. You can bring as many guns as you like and switch between the ranges without additional fee. If we want to skeet shoot or just want to go outdoors this is our first choice.
Target Master is an indoor range with friendly staff as well. They have a nice selection of new and used guns as well as rentals available. Range fee is $15 and it includes a target sheet. Hearing/eye protection costs $2 each (I think). They also have reload ammo they make themselves which works just fine in our guns. This is by far our favorite range.

These are both a little bit of a drive from McKinney (we live here too :)) but worth it for nice knowledgeable staff and cheaper fees than Bullet Trap or Elm Fork.
Unfortunately the Collin County Gun Range off 380 out by Princeton was shut down years ago due to zoning issues. Wish it was still open. :(

Kfp Message sent. Thanks for the info. ELM fork was nice. Cost me 15 to shoot. I went there with Dallas Shooter Group. Good time. Is Target Masters in Garland also?

Target Master is technically in Dallas, right off 635 and Jupiter. Their website is http://www.targetmasters.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;. It's not a bad drive for us (we're right at SH 121 and 75) and we enjoy the staff there more than any other range. They're knowledgeable but not overly biased or pompous like we have found at other ranges (not any of the ranges listed here, though - other areas of Texas). :)

May we can go shooting sometime. Were very close to each other. I'm at Custer and Virgina Parkway.

If y'all are interested in another tag-along, I'm in Richardson just off Belt Line/Main and 75. My folks got me a GC to Targetmaster's for my b-day in Aug and I have yet to use it...but am chomping at the bit to do so. Feel free to PM/e-mail/whatever if y'all get a group appointment and there's room for one more. :cheers2:

I just discovered a great shooting range in Sherman if you're willing to make the drive up there - it's about 50 minutes.
It's called Red River Firearms and they have a very nice 25yd handgun range and offer a CHL class several times a month for $120 - it includes everything but ammo. Only thing is, if you're shooting for pleasure and use silhouettes they don't allow headshots.
Their system is electronic so you don't have to guess at odd yardage - just punch it in and off your target goes. They also have a large "glass wall" of sorts that allows an observer to watch the shooters without actually being in the same room, which I found desirable.

You can also try Tom bean range, I posted about this public range, un-attended range with honorary paying system, clean after yourself and just act normally. you can shoot 100 yard rifle and pistol too.

Once the weather gets better PM and we will go there or to Garland Public range.

This is good information. I also live in McKinney, and so far I've only been to the Bullet Trap. My folks live east of Sherman, so I'm going to have to check out the Tom Bean range.

I just have to add my 2¢ here.

I had a "free" day today and decided to venture out to unexplored territory - decided a trip to TargetMaster was long overdue.

I'm sorry to say that I was not impressed. Had my range bag with me along with my carry - and didn't bother to even shoot - Why?

I wandered in the door and there were 4 staffers present, with one ringing out ONE customer. Three others making busy work. I was browsing the handgun cases - not once did anyone ask if they could show me something - never even made eye contact.

I really wanted to see something at the rifle counter - and one of the staffers came over, bent over and picked something off the bottom shelf and walked away - never acknowledged that I was there.

Their gun prices were astronomical - even at the "member" prices. You know, I must be old-school - I just don't get this whole "Pardner, you need to pay US a hundred bucks for the privilege of buying our goods at heavily inflated prices - and for your hundred bucks, we'll give you 5% off of retail."

Certainly not worth the drive for me - and I only drove from Allen.

I agree. In the mid 90s Targetmaster was a decent range. It has gone down hill. Have not been there for about 5 years. I use the Bullet Trap a lot. While they are strict, they have made a lot of range improvements in the last year. I am new to the McKinney area and looking for a range where I can practice something besides squared off to a target.

I just moved up to the Sherman/Denison area and had no idea about the Tom Bean range! My husband and I are very excited as this will be the first range we've found that allows things like drawing from a holster.
Plus, driving down to Garland to shoot rifles would have been a pain in the rear since there's only a pistol range up here in Sherman.
THANKS!! :D
