In doing some research very limited research, I have come to believe that open carry in Texas was actually restricted sometime in the 1870's.

Maybe someone here can verify that.

It seems kinda odd to me that open carry would have been regulated as early as that here in Texas where we still had Indian wars and snakes while riding on horseback.

I tend to agree with you. I can't tell you how many people are surprised that I OWN a gun. and they don't know that I am carrying a gun when I tell them that. The surprise would be great.

That being said, I would happily back Open Carry in TX. I highly doubt that they would FORCE individuals to open carry. It would just be another option.

How about:

Stopping at a gas station after dark, you get out of your car to fill the tank at a self-serve pump. You have your wallet out, and the Bad Guy(s) come up on you, one on each side--you're weapon is concealed, as required by law, and you DO NOT have time to draw because they came up so quickly. I'm not talking about being in condition WHITE here, I'm just talking they appeared out of the dark shadows from around the "Stop-N-Rob" so fast you did not have time to respond.

Of course because you're weapon is concealed they don't know that you're carrying. They have the drop on you... you have no other option but to give them your wallet and hope for the best.

Scenario number two: Stopping at a gas station after dark, you get out of your car to fill the tank at a self-serve pump. You have your wallet out, and because we now have open carry—you’re gun is at 3 o’clock—clearly visible. Bad guys come out of the dark from around the corner of the “Stop-N-Rob�; see your gun, and decide that they’ll go where the pickin’s will be easier. You escape without even knowing it only because they (the bad guy’s) saw your weapon and changed their mind.

I like # 2 the best.

Not that I want to hijack your scenario, but you can avoid this kind of thing by taking a credit card out of your wallet before getting out of the car. Likewise, if I have to go into a Stop and Rob, I put the cash in my pants pocket before getting out of the car.

The wallet does not see the light of day.

Kw5kw, You are right on this one. One of the things I tell our church folks is that you never know what did not happen because you were prepared. Good post.
IE: When we were on vacation the 1st of Aug in Lubbock I was in a local convenience store 2 blocks from the Father-in-laws house. It is 5:00 in the morning, drinking a little coffee & visiting w/ the clerk. (They all sleep til after breakfast) She gets a call from another of their stores about a young man in hooded sweat shirt. Milled around & left. The calling clerk said they thought he left due to several customers in the store headed for jobsites.
Sure enough here he comes. August morning, 80 degrees, hooded sweat shirt W/ hood up, hands in the warmer pockets. Before he gets to the door I get cell out & dial 911 & lay it on the ice cream counter in front of me. Push dial & I am audible to a dispatch. When he enters, "good morning young man, really that cold outside? He never broke stride, made a circle & back out the door.
What was he up to? What would he have done if I was oblivious to anything or she was alone? Don't know exactly. Generally up to no good though. We will never know what did not happen.

Or they see your weapon, devise a plan to disarm you, rob you and kill you with your own weapon. I don't see a problem with people open carry, but I do see a problem with people who are open carry and don't even understand about the 5 level or awareness, or even remotely have some sort of training on open carry. I guess it's more like a double edge sword.

Yes a 2 edged sword. I think there are far more street thugs that want easy victims & would pass an open carry citizen as their victim than there are those who will take the chance of winning the fight. They would rather steal the gun from an empty house than fight for it on a public street.
My .02 cents & some think it worth about half that.

I would never open carry, but it would be nice knowing that i could if i wanted. I vote for yes.

Well, like I said. I'm all for it. I just think it needs to be planned out a little. Like more mandatory training for everyone. lol.

I know that it can't always be avoided.....but gas stations and other vulnerable places are open during the day I make a real attempt not to put myself in these situations and try to choose an open, well-lighted station when I have no choice. If open carry was legal....I seriously doubt that I would ever do it. I prefer the rights we have....better for the criminal to wonder what I will do.
