I sent in both my DD-214 which showed separation from AIT and a copy of my letter of HD from my reserve unit. Mine is still processing, I guess we'll see.

As far as I know, an honorably discharged veteran is always eligible for the discount. I was Honorably discharged back '97 and got a veteran's discount on my CHL in 2008.

While the gist of what you are saying is correct, there is one technical correction I feel compelled to make. An honorably discharged veteran who is less than one year from their discharge date does not get the 50% discount. THEY GET IT FREE, just as if they were still on active duty.

I would think any retired military type gets a DD-214, Adrian, and indeed he or she is a veteran who was honorably discharged. I, for example, am retired after more than 20 years active service, and my DD-214 shows the service to have been honorable. My DD-214 is not a "discharge," per se, but is rather a certificate of separation and retirement after honorable service, and I am, of course, on retainer subject to recall. Or at least i was until I got so darned old. I think there is an age cutoff on being subject to recall, but not sure.

I would say that Honorably Discharged and Retired are one in the same in the eyes of the discount. 50% off would be my educated guess for retirees.

DD-214 is all I needed. It has to show what type of discharge you had example: Honorable. The price towards the state is $140.00 but sending in a copy of your DD-214 gets you half price off of that which I paid $70.00. this past January 2010. You send in copy of DD-214 and $70.00 check then you will be good to go as long as your background check comes back clear.

So if you have you DD-214 and a Vet ,the state fee is dropped from $70 ( as a vet ) to $35 correct?
All of my students have been civilian not military or retired military.

No the state fee is still $70 for 1st timer. It's just if you are a vet and expect the discount you have to send a copy of your DD-214. Or be over 60 in which case you don't to send anything extra.

The $35 is what it costs for renewal, for a vet filing with a DD-214 or if you are over 60 years of age.

Again the discounts cannot be combined its either one or the other not both.
