30.06 Sign Gets Shot Down
My place of worship was going to put up a 30.06 sign. I went ballistic, but it was obvious that some people in a position of authority had drunk the Kool-Aid. My well presented facts likening this to wearing a 'Kick Me' sign on one's back got twisted by our 'security' committee to make CHL holders appear to be a threat to public safety. As we have members who believe only LEOs should have access to guns, the antis prevailed.
The signs went up.
I enlisted some key members of our congregation to shoot down this idea and several high profile regulars stopped attending. We got word to the right people why some of us were MIA.
The signs came down.
The moral of this story is stand up and speak up for what you believe. A silent majority becomes irrelevant. I know that my protests were not generally popular and that some of the membership thought I was being rather extreme.
What's great is the clergy who were initially for the 30.06 now tell me they completely understand and agree with my position about no signs, even though some still don't believe in CHL. It wasn't so much an issue of being able to carry as it was about advertising that no one would be carrying. I didn't realize how many were carrying to our services. While those who would be victims don't like the idea, I'm comforted by knowing we have practicing RKBA among our rather liberal congregation.
Happy ending: Some of our clergy who have never before even held a gun have since come with me to the range or have expressed interest. Win!

it's socially unacceptable to be ahead of your time.

Re: 30.06 Sign Gets Shot Down
The LEO who advises our church on security is very anti CHL in church. He claims that if anything ever happens stray CHL bullets will be flying all over the place with lawsuits soon to follow. I am still waiting for him to show me any documented cases where this has happened. Of course one of the first conversations we had was when he stated in a briefing that church carry was a violation. I educated him on that one real quick. He then suggested that we needed to post. That is when he found out how many people in the room where packing.
According to my instructor at the time of my class there had been over 300 documented cases in Texas of a CHL saving the life of a LEO. How come we never hear about stuff like that? I need to call him and get some reference for this info. Would love to use it in my next encounter.

I spent an hour trying to find the video of the freelance cameraman with a chl (or equivalent) that saves a cop being overpowered by a man but couldn't find it

That's just one more reason why I like serving a tiny little congregation in the country. Virtually all of my leadership has their CHL's and most of them carry 24/7.

I'm a huge fan of asking the elders, "Who owns the church?" when they get too corporate. The squirming around 501c3 etc. is hilarious to watch

There aren't 300 listed on that site, but it will get you started at least.

iratollah, most excellent job! It is refreshing to see how, in the face of church shootings and burnings, anti-Semitic hate crimes, and the rise of "imported militant religious extremism with violent doctrine" (I'm being as politically correct as I know how), the clergy are a) taking the protection of their worship communities more seriously; and b) understanding that the safety of their flocks is diminished by barring legally carried weapons from the sanctuary.
Good on you, mate!

Re: 30.06 Sign Gets Shot Down
DPS has decreed that a church may have it's own security team without security license as long as no one is armed. This is where this whole thing stinks to high heaven. One law says I can carry and that i can carry in church as long as it is not posted. Another law says if I am part of a safety team or security team I cannot carry though no matter what you call yourself, CHL holder or Security, the law that authorizes the use of deadly force does not state as a CHL holder you may use deadly force in these circumstances and as a Security team member only in these. The law says the use of deadly forces is authorized and you dont have to have a specific title to use it.
Only a group of lawyers could have screwed this up like this.

Re: 30.06 Sign Gets Shot Down
Thanks. I spoke with my instructor and he said it was 300 nation wide in the last 15 years. He was going to dig up some info. He did state that 5 months ago a chl saved a dallas LEOs life on stemmons 2 blocks outside of downtown dallas. Of course there is no telling how many times this has happened and went unreported.KFP wrote:http://www.kc3.com/self_defense/officers_peril.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;jmra wrote:According to my instructor at the time of my class there had been over 300 documented cases in Texas of a CHL saving the life of a LEO.
