Re: .380 ammo
FWIW, my LCP is not picky at all about ammo. I've fed it flat-point, JHP. and FMJ from various brands and it ate it all. Magtech, Winchester, Monarch, Remington, and Hornady have all feed flawlessly though it.
I bought the Herter's steel-cased stuff for a Bersa Thunder, which is another gun I've found is not picky about brands or types of ammo. I've not tried it in the LCP (it was a gift for someone else), so I can't give you first-hand experience with it, but I wouldn't think it would be a problem.

I was in that Academy a month or so ago and they had a good offering of .380. I didn't realize how popular .380 was at the time or I may have purchased some just because.Astro99 wrote:I feel like I just won the lotto. The Wal-Mart on Fry near I-10 had some .380 last I looked a few days ago but I don't remember what kind or how much of it.

I have had the same issue with Cabelas. They will keep pushing out the date until they finally cancel the order.mkosmo wrote:I ordered a 500-round supply of Magtech (with dry box) for $189.99 from Cabelas on January 11 with a 1-2 week backorder. It's been pushed back and pushed back, and now shows tentative arrival on Mar 15. Coming close... but still, I'm disappointed. I don't think I'm going to be buying from Cabelas again any time soon. They could at least be honest with backorder times.NcongruNt wrote:A 250-round box of Magtech is around $110, but shows on backorder with a lead time of about a week:

This isn't the first time I've been jerked around by them like this either.
I did find magtech .380 at the TSRA gun show. Bought 400 rounds for $175.00 plus tax. Not as good a deal as 500 for $190 but at least I was able to leave with the ammo in hand. What I pretty much have found out with Cabelas is if it aint on the shelf you probably are not going to have much luck ordering online. I think they fill the store orders (for shelf stock) before they fill the online orders.

Re: .380 ammo
Hrm, I did not realize they were berdan primed. That makes them significantly less valuable to me, as I can't reload them. Who makes Berdan-primed .380 any more?
Still, a decent deal for cheap plinking ammo. My guess is that they're buying it up in bulk from Cabela's and then reselling it by the box. Still, they're certainly not scalping the stuff, as they would only be making about $1/box that way (buying it for $340/1000 rounds).
By the way, it's Whitestone Castle Armory. Though, White Castle Armory would explain how they get all those holes in the burgers!

Re: .380 ammo
Ah! A Freudian slip. I haven't had lunch. Actually I see quite a bit of Berdan primed as I do ammo searches. No reloadabilty is a bummer for sure. I've heard several reasons for .380 shortage. The most interesting was that there's not a great demand for .380. Makes no sense to me.NcongruNt wrote:Hrm, I did not realize they were berdan primed. Re: .380 ammo
The most plausible explanation I've heard is that .380 is made on the same machines as 9mm. With the rush and hoarding of the past year or so, 9mm had higher priority for production, thus the shortage of .380.puma guy wrote: I've heard several reasons for .380 shortage. Also, from what I can tell, 9mm NATO production for Iraq has gone down, as I got a bunch boxes of Winchester 9mm NATO rounds from several sources a couple of months ago. From what I've heard, that stuff only comes on the civilian market when there's a surplus in supply due to lowered demand from the military. Right about that time, .380 went from "impossible to find" to "difficult to find, but possible", so my guess is lowered production of 9mm NATO freed up some of the machines for .380.
Re: .380 ammo
Fwiw I just ordered four 50 round boxes of Winchester whitebox 95 grain 380 at Midway for $17.99 each plus shipping today.
It is back ordered and due in 3/19/10.
Beats nearly $30.00 a box at a large gun store/ range that I saw a couple of weeks ago.
It's worth my wait as I have about 200 rounds currently.

Re: .380 ammo
Maybe that's why they started doing this...notice the sticker...Commander wrote: One of the Sporting Goods clerks there told me that they do get in .380 occasionally, but there is one guy who comes in every morning and if they have .380, buys up to the limit of 6 boxes and then comes back with his wife and buys more. The clerk suspects this guy is buying to sell at gun shows for double the price.

I guess the sticker is impossible to remove?
I checked the Katy Wal-Mart at Fry tonight. No .380. Didn't get a chance to check at Academy...barely got a chance to drool over the handgun case.
