Re: A few questions on buying an AR-15 M4-gery
Usually I would second the RRA, Colt, LMT, and Noveske comment, but my dept just got a bulk order of Colt's in and they all have a problem with a pin getting worn down. Colt is talking about possibly replacing all of the rifles. I'm talking upwards of like 30 weapons, all brand new.
My LMT is the bee's knees...but I'm like STUPID BIASED so to be fair there are many other brands out there.
For the money, I don't think RRA or S&W can be beat. Should be able to get a great rifle for under a G.

Re: A few questions on buying an AR-15 M4-gery
It really depends on how you plan on using your AR.
If you are using the AR as a range plinker and just a fun shooter then that dps rifle should be fine.
If you plan on using the AR as a self defense/home defense weapon then I would go with an Lmt, Bcm or noveske.
Also get the 1/7 or 1/8 barrel in 5.56 chamber and you can use the heavy bullets for HD/SD, they are longer also.
With one of these manufacturers you will also get the correct height "F" marked front sight for an A3 flat top upper.
With some lower tier AR's like BM, Olyarms Dblstar and RRA the BCG isn't alway's staked properly so that is what quite often fails.
All that said if you don't plan on running your AR hard in some "shoot school" classes or learning to properly use the wep system then
you will be OK with the DPS AR. I have an Olyarms and love the thing but I don't consider it anything but a range gun and to use my 22lr conversion in to train cheaply, for more "social" work if need be I have an BCM upper with a LMT lower.
Also if you do get the AR do yourself a favor and definitely get a 22lr conversion and some Blackdog mags for cheap shooting/training, I trained the wife very cheap with a box of 22's and she learned the manual of arms quite fast.
My wallet was very happy!

I'm glad you mentioned S&W.gigag04 wrote:

I'm now starting to look at the Smith & Wesson M&P15X Rifle.

They are running a special with this, 5 free magazines:

I'm hoping to purchase it this Monday or Tuesday. I was surprised to find out that I got a bonus from work, which would almost cover the cost of the rifle (after tax). Plus 5 free mags sounds great.
Does anyone know if this comes with a carry case? I didn't see anything about it in the spec's.
TIA
And as always, many thanks for all the replies.

I've been thinking about the .22 conversion kit also for training. I've never had a rifle like this before, so I plan on familiarizing myself with the rifle before I take it to the range. I'm more into bolt action rifles.big 54r wrote:It really depends on how you plan on using your AR.

I'm planning on using it for plinking (MAYBE, hunting feral boars), and home defense. I keep hearing the .223 is an excellent home defense round.

Re: A few questions on buying an AR-15 M4-gery
Well...
My wife just saw a pic of the rifle I'm planning to buy.
Her words, "Good G*d, that's what you want to buy! That's scary looking! Why do you need something like that?!?"
She didn't say I COULDN'T buy it though...

Ha, that's the same response I got from my wife when I bought mine. You want to spend that much on that?! And why do you need that? I just said I carried one for 8 years and I want one, and you can never have enough guns or bullets. Problem solved.

Re: A few questions on buying an AR-15 M4-gery
My wife shot my little CAR, and said "Thank You, Honey!!!"
All that time socking back the spare change, etc, poof! it was gone...
The next one is going to have one really long Heavy barrel, and I'm not going to let her shoot it, either.

Yeah, I guess that is how they became called, "Uglies," and "Evil Black Rifles."aaronspuler wrote:My wife asked if I was going to start up a militia :)Mando'a wrote:Well...

Re: A few questions on buying an AR-15 M4-gery
A friend bought the "optics ready" Bushmaster from Academy. I have to say that it is a very good shooter and has a very smooth trigger compared to my RRA standard trigger.
On the other hand, I picked up an LMT complete lower. It was more expensive with the upgraded trigger, grip, and stock, but it is very sweet. I hardly even have to think about the trigger pull when shooting groups.
My only other suggestion is to get one with the removable carry handle. It makes it a breeze to mount a scope later if you find you want to.

One of the lead firearms/swat instructors at TEEX said if he had to buy a new patrol rifle and did not have unlimited funds, he would get an S&W. He told me that is based on running patrol rifle schools all over the state and seeing every platform imaginable. I don't think you could go wrong with the M&P - and the 5 magpul mags is +/- $100 value.
I have a BM that is ok, but sloppy IMO - it's a DI setup. My LMT is as solid as it gets, but its a piston too. I want an S&W to have a solid DI rifle.
It's on a long list of "wants"

Re: A few questions on buying an AR-15 M4-gery
Stopped off at GT Distributors in Austin and no love on the M&P15x, or any other S&W 15's.
They may have 'em in stock at the end of the month.
I called Red's and McBrides, they are out also.
Bummer

I think you can get the same kinds of deals on S&W + magazines through CDNN. Probably cheaper through CDNN as well.Mando'a wrote:Stopped off at GT Distributors in Austin and no love on the M&P15x, or any other S&W 15's.

Re: A few questions on buying an AR-15 M4-gery
I bought the Bushmaster Texas M4 carbine today.
It's going to be a few weeks before I can take it to the range.
I'll spend the time familiarizing myself with it.
Anyone have any good resources for cleaning?
