Get a Spikes Tactical!!! They are awesome and have the best customer service. Here's their entry level rifle:

Yep, that price is tough to beat... I would just want something with rails for attachments. I guess you could change the handguards out?

At that price point, you're not going to find any manufacturer (of decent quality) that will include a rail. You can switch them out pretty easily though.

Wow, that makes me want to give Spike's some of my business. That was truly amazing what they did. You never see things like this happen anymore, Spike's showed their true colors there.

That barrel-breakin procedure is one of the most hotly debated subjects in the sport.
I don't know if there is an absolute truth to it unless you are a benchrest shooter with an electron borescope and lots of time.
For me, break-in consists of shooting the first 100 rounds with moly-coated bullets.
And I've only done that with .223s.

In the price range you posted, and if Dad is buying it as a gift, I'd buy a name brand that uses the mil-spec lower.
S&W, Sig, Bushmaster etc. You can buy all of these with the railed forend but you may have to do that online.
Otherwise order it separately.

What about AR rails? Do they fit on this gun? I am always leary of proprietary platforms because I don't want to unduly limit my options for add-ons and accessories. Thanks guys for the input so far, all good stuff!

Sorry, I meant more like can I put quad a quad rail type setup on it? I just am not a fan of that stock furniture (no offense). I noticed the Sig 556 SWAT but it looks to be on the high end of things.

So I sent my dad a text about something, and just slipped in very jokingly "oh yeah and how about an AR for graduation lol" and he replies "is that what you really want? give me 3 options..." Haha well that worked out well! So, I need suggestions from none other but you fine gentlemen and ladies. Working in the $700-$1400 range, and I would be lying if I said I am not might attracted to the Ruger 556 for many reasons. However, I don't want to jump in head first without many many second opinions. So tell me what you like people!

P.S. Optics aren't in that price, I will take care of that myself. 5.56 caliber only as well, work on other calibers later.

You can buy a rail for the Sig but the rifle itself is at the top end of your budget without a rail. The rail is also going to proprietary to Sig as well. AR15 rails are almost all interchangeable. There are a few that have special barrel nut but it can all be changed if need be.

Keep in mind the rail adds quite a bit of weight to the front of the rifle and can make them unbalanced. I know the big honkin rails look the coolest but do yourself a favor and get the smallest rail that will fit your needs. Heavy rifles suck!

Without a rail on top? All mine came with one. Along with a Sig holo sight mounted to it.
