Pat Check as regular routeen

In the past couple of weeks there have been 2 threads about rigging up & forgetting to holster a gun before leaving.

This is not uncommon w/ folks young or new to carry.

Make a habbit of what I teach & call "Pat Check".
I started this long before CC & it has adapted very well. As a young preacher & new to that I realized I would often leave the house for hospitals, home visits, singings,... & OH No I left tracts, bulitens, or even no pen to write a note w/.

I started a "Pat Check" then & extended it to billfold & keys the 1st time I locked my keys in the truck as a young man.

When I get dressed & arm of a morning I pat it all. ID (around my neck Dogtag type), church tapes in vest pocket, pen, (elbow to side to pat shoulder rig if that is today) AD flyers, cell phone, (as I pat phone right elbow goes to gun if on my belt), keys, bill fold, as I go to billfold I brush belt on left side & touch flashlight & extra mag.

Every time I get out of the truck I do the short version. Upper vest pockets - tapes & pen, ( church tapes are what I forget more than anything now), clamp left elbow to side if shoulder carry, go to lower vest pockets, phone in right pocket & elbow gun butt at the same time if belt carry, keys & lock the vehicle.
I can do these & talk if necessary, I cant think & talk at the same time. Never have been able to.

For those that think this is too obvious & someone will know you are "feeling of your gun" Not so. There are several of the old hands here that I see occassionally & I will bet none of them has ever noticed. The sheep sure wont.

Try it. You will never leave home w/o gun billfold, ID, cell phone,.....lock keys in the truck either.

Any way it works for an old man. YMMV.

I can vouch for the technique. I've always done this for my billfold, keys and such. When I started carrying, it became routine for the pistol and accessories as well. Don't know where I learned it!

Interestingly enough, I do the same to verify I'm *NOT* carrying when I have to disarm as well.

And without thinking about it too much, people do it all the time with their watches, wallets, glasses, keys, and other accessories...nobody notices it as "unusual". In fact, I'd suggest (I will experiment for fun--I like to "people watch" and such) that you can touch your gun(s), spare ammo, knives, and anything else with nobody the wiser--especially if it's part of the whole "hmm...wallet, watch, glasses, pen, keys, pistol, magazines, etc." routine.

And don't call yourself old...you're only as "old" as you allow yourself to feel!

Absolutely!!! To verify the few times you are not carrying. I have never really worried about leaving home w/o it. I have really checked & double checked to make sore I was not armed the few places I HAVE TO GO that I must disarm.

Same here. I have never accidentally left my gun at home (yet), but I have forgotten it was on me
as I'm walking into school.

So now I do the "pat check" to make sure I don't have it.

I do the "pat check" every day, multiple times (leaving the house, the office, a restaurant, etc.).

He says, "Yeah, I'm taking this class over to the JC where I'm learning some memory techniques to help me recall things I've forgotten. It's already making my life a little easier."

His friend, who suffers from the same decline in short term memory, says "Wow, that's great. I should sign up for it. What was the teacher's name, and how does it work?"

The first guy says, "Watch this..... Ok, what do you call that plant with the beautiful red flowers and the thorns all over it?"

The second guy says, "A rose?"

The first guy says, "Yeah, that's right. A rose. Hey Rose! What's the name of that teacher I'm taking the memory class from?"

Yeah...same here... I've never left home without it (yet) but a couple of weeks ago I was standing in line at the *gasp* Post Office and realized I had forgotten to disarm...

Since I do not wear a watch, and my phone is my watch, i check for that, and at the end, I always check for the weapon. (bear in mind, I got my CHL long after seeing the Austin Powers Movie)

I do the pat check too.

Still haven't figured out how to make sure I don't forget deodorant, though. I forget to put it on at least once every 2 or 3 months - usually when my morning routine gets disrupted.

Actually, they've been using that phrase for years in the former British Empire. I had a roommate from New Zealand back in 1979 who used to say that once in a while. He was a PhD in civil engineering from Auckland University who was doing a post doctoral research fellowship on earthquake engineering at Caltech.

As I visualize the Signum Crucis, I hope the Kiwi started that phrase with spectacles.
