Newbie...Question concerning credit union...
Hello folks, I am new to this site. Much of the info is either helpful, or funny (sometimes both) and I like that. I am waiting for my plastic…seems like it takes forever :{
Can hardly wait to do my Wally Walk. When I first read about it…I thought it was a joke. It’s an important rite of passage…kinda like your first kiss…
I do have a question…my credit union in El Paso, Texas has a notice on the door that reads…”Carrying of firearm on these premises is prohibited. Except for peace officers who are required by law.”
There is no mention of 30.06, or anything else for that matter. My question is (which I’m sure you’ve already anticipated) can I legally carry a firearm into this credit union (once my CHL comes in of course)?
On-line CHL submitted initial info and fee: 7/5/10
CHL Class: 7/6-7/8/10
Rec’vd pin: 7/7/10
Fingerprints L-1: 7/9/10
Mailed CHL application: 7/9/10
Background review began: 7/15/10
Background review completed: 7/27/10
Plastic: ????????????????

Welcome to to the forum and yes you can. Be sure to look for an additional 30.06 sign though. Our CU has the same sign on the door but on the wall it has a 30.06.

Thank you RPBrown...your advice is appreciated, because it never occurred to me to look on walls or elsewhere. I'd sure hate to make my appearance on a "COPS" epsisode...

Re: Newbie...Question concerning credit union...
My bank, which is a community bank with its roots in credit unions, has a "gunbusters" sign on the door. I pay it no mind at all.

Re: Newbie...Question concerning credit union...
As long as A) it is not posted with a compliant 30.06 sign, or B) you are not given verbal notice that you may not carry in the bank (or credit union), then you may do so.cditropan1 wrote:The Annoyed Man...I have spent some time looking at hundred of posts on this site...I only wish my credit union had that gun busters sign...then I know I could carry for sure.
If their signage is non-30.06 compliant, resist the temptation to inform and educate them. Just smile and walk right on past it.
In any case, if the sign is posted inside where you cannot see it until after you have entered, rather than conspicuously at the entrances where you can see it before entering, then you break no law by entering because the sign is not conspicuously posted at the entrance. HOWEVER, once you have entered and you then see the sign, you are required to leave right then and disarm before reentering.... ....if you wish to reenter.
Here is the law, from the DPS website:
So my advice would be as follows: Go ahead and carry into your credit union, past the invalid sign at the door. But keep a sharp eye peeled for a valid 30.06 sign. If you don't see one, then carry on. And if you don't see one, whatever you do, don't tell anybody you're looking for a 30.06 sign, and DON'T ask any bank employees if they have one posted somewhere. If you do see one, then leave and secure your weapon before returning.PROHIBITING HANDGUNS IN A BUSINESS OR OTHER ENTITY
In order to provide notice that entry on property by a license holder with a concealed handgun is forbidden, Penal Code Section 30.06(c)(3)(A) requires that a written communication contain the following language:
"PURSUANT TO SECTION 30.06, PENAL CODE (TRESPASS BY HOLDER OF A LICENSE TO CARRY A CONCEALED HANDGUN) A PERSON LICENSED UNDER SUBCHAPTER H, CHAPTER 411, GOVERNMENT CODE (CONCEALED HANDGUN LAW), MAY NOT ENTER THIS PROPERTY WITH A CONCEALED HANDGUN."
"CONFORME A LA SECCIÓN 30.06 DEL CÔDIGO PENAL (TRASPASAR PORTANDO ARMAS DE FUEGO) PERSONAS CON LICENCIA BAJO DEL SUB-CAPITULO H, CAPITULO 411, CODIGO DE GOBIERNO (LEY DE PORTAR ARMAS), NO DEBEN ENTRAR A ESTA PROPIEDAD PORTANDO UN ARMA DE FUEGO."
Download language
Penal Code Section 30.06(c)(3)(B) further states that a sign must meet the following requirements:
Please note that while the language provided above may be downloaded for convenience, it does not meet the requirements of Section 30.06(c)(3)(B) and may not be used as a sign.
- i. includes the language described by Paragraph (A) in both English and Spanish;
ii. appears in contrasting colors with block letters at least one inch in height; and
iii. is displayed in a conspicuous manner clearly visible to the public.
OTH, concealed is concealed..... just sayin'....

Yeeee hawwww...I can't help but feel a little naughty carrying a concealed weapon into a credit union. And your wisdom clearly shows when you write "resist the temptation to inform and educate them"...because it is true...in my (crazy state of mind) I actually did contemplate letting them know. But I mentally shot that foolish idea down...I got my sanity back. Probably a "newbie" contemplation.

Re: Newbie...Question concerning credit union...
cdit, I think we use the same CU. They had those signs in the parking lot for a while, as well.cditropan1 wrote:I do have a question…my credit union in El Paso, Texas has a notice on the door that reads…”Carrying of firearm on these premises is prohibited. Concealed means concealed. Make sure you're good before you go in, nod and smile at the security guard by the door, conduct your business, and thank the guard for his vigilance on your way out.

I think I go into the lobby a couple times a year, if that often. Most of the time my business is something I can do through the drive-through.

Re: Newbie...Question concerning credit union...
Quidni...funny stuff you wrote about smiling at the security guard.
Now, I just gotta go to this credit union, after I get my plastic, and have conducted my "official" Wally Walk.
With my luck...my gun will fall out of the holster...just as I am handing the teller my note requesting my specific money denominations (which I normally do). The gun will plop on the ground...screams will be heard throughout the bank...and I will be on the 6 o'clock news with a mug shot that makes me look like a cross between a werewolf and Eddie Van Halen or Whitney Houston (after drugs).

To keep from being arrested on COPS, all you have to do is keep your shirt on. You know the only guys that go to jail are the ones not wearing a shirt. Simple solution!cditropan1 wrote:I'd sure hate to make my appearance on a "COPS" epsisode...
