Are you "over-prepared"?

People are always going to make judgements about people without having understanding of why we do what we do. I can't be worried about what may or maybe said about me in court because someone put my family or my life in life-threating dangerous situation and having no other way to prevent me from shooting that person. On the average day I carry as follows: Sig P220R w/ .45acp 230gr Gold Dots, 2 10rd mags, Blackhawk CQD II folder, 550 Paracord bracelet (5 ft of rope), HellFighter X-15 flashlight, Zippo lighter and my Blackberry. Yeah, I know a lot of it is expensive stuff but I'm not going to go cheap on something that I feel could save my life or another person. We are already going to be demonized because we have our CHL's. People do not like it when other people rock the boat and appently being prepared and not wanting to rely on other people has a tendency to do that. For the most part, the mass like being sheep and depending on their shepard's (LEO's, EMS and Gov) for eveything. I would rather be a Lion for a day, then a sheep for a hundred years! The average response time from my local police in Brazo Valley is from 6 to 14 minutes. That is and eternity for someone going through a life threating situation. Even with the minimum tools, six minutes still very dangerous. If being over prepared demonize me, then so be it but I will not be the one laying in a pool of my own blood becasue some dirtbag broke into my house and I was not prepared and waited for the Police to come save me. I'm not talk bad about my local law enforcement but the response times were take from a recent city report. I respect them and the hard tasks they are charged with keeping. They cannot be everywhere and no one should we expect them to. In the end, you have to be able to rely on yourself because there is not always going to be a Shepard to keep the wolves away.

I've been trying to decide what all to take to west Texas next month. I know I'm takin the two handguns, the one I carry and the one in the truck, but something makes me want to take an AR or maybe the 870. I guess it's the closeness to the border, especially in Brackettville and Del Rio.

Personal choice... I'd bring the AR, but that's just me. But my concern with having the extra weapons in my vehicle, particularly along the border, would be having it stolen with my guns inside. I'm not saying don't do it. I'd do it. But just be really, really careful about where you leave your truck when you're not driving it.

I carry the following items daily: 1. Cell phone my first option (time permitting to call 911) if something bad is going down. 2. Pepper spray 1st line of self defense 3: Flashlite pocket size with really bright beam and strobe (in case I miss with the pepper spray) 4. LCP loaded with JHP ( which is my last resort ) and 3 xtra mags loaded with same (Just in case of multipal attackers) 5. Tiny folding knife (to cut a knotch on my gun when I down the bg-Just kidding on that one. ) Never know when you may have to cut the tag off a new pair of sun glasses or a new purse that you want to wear/carry right NOW.

Glock - First and Final line of defense. No paprika for me...
Gerber Knife - Sometimes, stuff needs to be cut (clam shell plastic cases are a pain)
Cell Phone - To call the cops to clean up the mess

As long as whatever the CHLer carries is all legal the opponent lawyer can cry like wolf all night long and most likely will be get an objection as irrelevant to the case. What is most important what one does with his gear and why he did whatever resulted in a man in a black bag.

If it were me (I have the storage space in my truck), I'd take both.

I also lug around a good deal of mostly harmless EDC on my person. Now that I have my CHL, the pistol is just another tool in the toolbox, another way to solve unforseen problems. Oh, you chipped a fingernail? I'm on it. What's that, you have a headache? I have a virtual medicine chest on my belt. You need a tiny screwdriver, you say? I'm your man.
There's an active shooter in the mall gunning people down? I have something for him, too.

Carry gun and at least one or two refills. Flashlight two knives lockback serrated and my dads Buck the last gift I gave him before he passed.

Less ammo would havereally been nice & a lot lighter.
Why did I even bring that knife today.
Since I did not use my light I will just leave it home from now on.

I guess i'm under prepaired. My current summer carry gun is the Kahr PM9 with 124gr Winchester PDX1 ammo, 7 rounds no spare mag.I have
a tiny pocket knife but it is sharpe. I don't carry a flashlight on me but i have an old 3 cell Mag-Light i keep in the truck, makes a great club.
When it gets cold and i wear a jacket i will carry the Kimber Crimson Carry Ultra 45acp with 230 gr Winchester PDX1 and spare mag though.

Massad Ayoob is a police officer, expert witness, firearms instructor, and competitor. His legal experience is arresting people and testifying for or against someone. If you are accused of a crime it would be nice to have him as a witness for your defense, but he is not an Attorney which makes me hesitant to take his legal advice. When someone writes a book similar to his they attempt to provide advice that will most likely work in every state, the problem is that such advice will handicap you in most states and might still cause you trouble from a legal perspective. In general you should never ask a law enforcement Officer for legal advice, thats something you should ask an attorney.

I think Ayoob is an interesting guy. I often hear "Well Massad Ayoob says....." and his word is taken as scripture on whatever topic. Im not saying he is wrong or doesnt know his stuff. Good points are made by him sure.

A lot of times I carry an EDC bag. Usually my firearm is on my hip but here have been a few times when its in my EDC bag, I carry a small Maxpedition Gearslinger pack that contains stuff like my phone, asprin, titanium sporks (quite handy), flashlight/stobe light, Gerber razor blade folder, notepad and pens, small first aid kit, etc. It sounds like a lot but its really not. I do carry a few different knives in my bag. I have a small collection of knives and I keep about 2-3 different ones in my EDC. All serve a use if need be.

No its nothing 'tactical' or mall ninja-esque. I dont carry stuff that would make me look or feel like Im trying to be a SWAT officer or Navy Seal. I just carry tools and stuff I actually use.

I pray Im never in court and yes its a valid point to think about these things should one have to go to court. But Im going to carry the things I use daily. Every knife, tool, etc is legal.

In general you should never ask a law enforcement Officer for legal advice, thats something you should ask an attorney.

Especially if you are under arrest.
