I have a few questions. Just purchased a handgun in preparation for starting the CHL process. I plan on going to the range fairly often now and I am concerned about any rules for transporting. I drive a truck (no trunk) so what is legal going back and forth to the range? Also I travel weekly in Texas so I take it the same rules would apply CHL or not(?). Any recommendations on a good range close to 290/1960 area in Houston would be great, too. I'm thoroughly confused by the ambiguities the law supplies. Thanks

Welcome to the Forum Fletch. Hang around and you will learn a lot.

MPA (Motorist Protection Act)
You are legal to carry in your car if:
1. It is not in plain view.
2. You are not committing a crime other than class C traffic violations.
3. You are not a member of a criminal street gang a defined in chapter 71 of the Texas Penal Code.
4. You are not prohibited by the State or Federal Government from lawfully possessing a firearm.

If you don't mind driving a bit south of I-10, there's the American Shooting Center in George Bush Park - http://www.amshootcenters.com/. It's outdoors and therefore pretty warm this time of year, but the price and facilities are great. I'm sure others know of indoor ranges around as well; I've just never tried any in town myself.

And Carlson's got all you need for driving around with a handgun, for the most part. Keep it concealed and keep it with you in the car until you get your plastic, then keep it with you everywhere you can! And welcome!

there's a range off of 290 and Skinner called Hot Wells. and if you're more toward 249 or 45 on 1960, there's Shiloh Shooting Range. Northward toward Spring Cypress and Kuykendahl, there's Spring Guns and Ammo. The cheapest of your options is going to be Hot Wells, because it's outdoors. The other two have indoor ranges.

+1 on Hotwells range. $7.51 for one gun and you can shoot all day. (or as long as you can take the heat) Great folks to deal with also. It is my second home. ;-)

This will help with questions, and you can start looking it over to get ready for class. It's in pdf format so you can download it and keep it on your desktop
