Getting back on topic ...

On Tuesday, a 55-year-old woman from Louisiana staying at the San Luis Hotel in Galveston reported that 16 pieces of jewelry worth $24,800 plus $200 cash were stolen from her purse at the side of the pool.

Police stated that they have a suspect, but no arrest has been made.

I don't know why anyone would bring anything to a swimming pool other than a towel.

I was making the distinction between wear and bring.

My wife and I went to Rio de Janiero years ago. The hotel had an orientation session to help us avoid all the scams and hazards that exist in a place like that. The speaker said, "Don't bring anything to the beach that you want to take back [because it would be stolen]. What people show off at the beach in Rio is not something you can buy in a store." ;-)

She probably didn't want to leave it in her room, cuz hotel rooms are not very secure and it might, yannow, get stolen.

I did go swimming with my gun one time. Stainless steel can be handy.

The San Luis is a 5-star hotel. Millionaires stay there all the time. I'm sure they have adequate safes and security procedures.

The safes in hotel rooms are not very secure, but I would depend on one for the duration of a trip to the pool.

They just keep coming.

The police set out a bait car containing thousands of dollars' worth of electronics in the 2300 block of 49th Street in Galveston. A few hours later, a 20-year-old man opened the vehicle door (apparently it was unlocked) and took a bag of electronics.

Police followed him a short distance. When they confronted him he fled. He was found lying in a boat on a trailer.

He was arrested and charged with felony theft, evading arrest, and ... wait for it ... possession of marijuana.

In Galveston, a man allegedly broke into a closed dry cleaning shop Tuesday and stole two charity donation boxes. While police were investigating the break-in he returned and tried to bum a cigarette from one of the cops. He was arrested and charged with burglary.

Note that burglary of a building is a felony regardless of the value of what was stolen.

In Galveston, Friday, a woman was "detained" after IBC Bank, 500 Seawall Blvd., was robbed.

In October, the same bank was robbed by "a woman wearing a white trench coat, floppy hat, oversized sunglasses and rubber gloves."

No weapon was displayed in either robbery.
