1-4X Scope questions

If you can stretch your budget a bit I would recommend the Trijicon Accupoint TR24 in the reticle of your choice

From my research, all the 1-4x scopes appear to be made by the same company in China :)

I'm going between the Millett DMS or Primary Arms. Both appear to be exactly the same but with slightly different reticles. Primary Arms version is $119 and they are TX based as well.

Then you didn't do much research...(except for lower tier scopes, which are Chinese junk).

The Bushnell is made in Japan by the premier optics company there "LOW" (Light Optical Works), they make the glass for many of better scopes available today (that aren't German made). Almost all companies that offer lower tier scopes have parts (if not the entire scope that are made in CHINA). But the better scopes have good Japanese glass and some are manufactured entirely at that plant.

It would behoove everyone to do thorough research before purchasing....so that you'll get the most for your money.

Not to be an "Optics Snob"...but just stop and think about the cost to produce a scope....vs. the retail price. If you buy a $100.00 scope and then start whittling away the profit margins (retailer, wholesaler, importer, manufacturer) you end up with a $25.00-$30.00 scope (cost to produce). Now really.........how good could it be?

On a rimfire....that might be O.K., but if you need/want better performance, then stay away from lower tier (read Chinese) junk.

At the same time......don't assume that ALL scopes of a certain platform (1 X 4) are made in China, they are NOT. It is PRICE that seems to dictate country of manufacture and quality (or the lack of).

Agree with TxD, eye relief is a must for a pistol AR.

At our 3 gun match last week, we had someone shoot the match with an AR pistol with an Eotech and flip out magnifier mountd. Made hits on steel at 150 yds.

The Trijicon tr24 is an amazing scope and the best part is you NEVER need batteries. I like the Burris and the Millet also. To put into perspective about lens quality-good camera lenses are expensive-cheap ones are well...cheap, good binoculars are expensive and cheap ones are???, quality lenses are not easy or inexpensive to manufacture so quality scopes are not a drop in the bucket either.

Picked one of these up at SWFA yesterday. They're local so I had to pay taxes, but didn't have to pay shipping or wait on it. They are always $199 at SWFA.

Obviously I went into it knowing that it is a cheap Chinese scope, but I'm not expecting much. Since it was only $199 and has a lifetime warranty, I figure I can give it a shot. At first glance, the scope appears to be very well built (i.e. HEAVY). I think you could drop this from 10 ft and it wouldn't hurt it. But, it is super heavy. As long as you don't plan on hauling your gun around, you should be ok. The glass is very, very clear. I was a bit surprised at that. The 1x is not a true 1 power, but very, very close. I was surprised at that too as I can use it with both eyes open. The reticule is awesome. Very easy to acquire target, especially with illumination. The illumination is comparable to my Eotech. I'm curious about battery life though because it uses a CR20032 battery. Manual says 50-150 hours depending on setting. We'll see about that, I have my doubts. One cool feature is that it has a spare battery compartment in the windage knob (comes with two batteries to get you started) Even if illumination goes out you still have a reticule to shoot with, unlike Eotech/Aimpoints. Also, the magnification seems to be about perfect for the AR platform. Not too much, but just enought to comfortable see 100 yard targets. Eye relief seems suck, but as long as you're consistent in your cheek placement, it should be fine. Comes with some really cheap flip up covers that I'll probably trash. Overall, I'm pretty impressed for the price. It's not a Leupold or Trijicon but I'm also not going to battle anytime soon. It should work for my paper targets and occasional varmint. Played with it outside last night and with the illumination and rail mounted flashlight it makes for a perfect varmint gun.

Thanks for all of the help! it made me think about a lot more than I had at the onset of this quest.

I ended up ordering a Vortex Razor HD 1-4x24 CQMR-1 scope and a set of Seekins matched rings, a lot more than I originaly wanted to spend, but it should last a loooooong time. Plus the vortex warranty is second to none.

I think that a handgun scope would be required on an AR pistol.
Extended eye relief. EER

All the scopes mentioned above have about 3" eye relief.
Then again, maybe I'm wrong.

It is a Burris TAC 30 with a Burris P.E.P.R. mount from Midway and a home made cat tail.
