How much training should a CHL holder have?

Maybe at the CHL course, the instructor has to stress the importance of training. It is ridiculous that some who are in the class to get their CHL and never touched a gun before and wants a CHL and most likely will never touch their gun at the range or in competition. Worse, they expect to use their firearms to counter an Active shooter, mugger, raper or home invasion. TRAINING, TRAINING and more TRAINING, even if it is not mandated by the government, it is your life on the line.

Bear in mind, though, that - as has been mentioned before - the shooting standards are on-par with that required of police officers (with the noted exception of a timed reload). Now ain't that scary?

If I were in charge, the standards would be a lot higher - not impossible by any manner of means, but not something that someone brand-new to shooting would be able to pass easily.

That said, the CHL-course does a pretty good job for being a starting point; unfortunately a lot of folks seem to believe that once they've passed, they don't have to lift a finger again.

No kidding, when I qualified I hadn't fired a pistol in over 15 years and shot a 233 or 93%. I was holding a perfect score until we moved out to the 15 yard mark. I would like to receive more training but most of it is cost prohibitive for me. I have seen some that seems to be more affordable but it leaves me wondering am I getting what I pay for?

Thanks for saying this. I was a bit worried that I'd get piled on with zero support.

As for those citing the 2nd Amendment as an unqualified response to my comments, as I wrote before I wholeheartedly embrace our gun rights. Yet, the rights of each of us ends at the point where the rights of others begins. In other words, someone else's right to have a gun doesn't override my right not to get shot because they suck at using it. Said differently, "Life*, liberty and the pursuit of happiness" didn't have to wait for an Amendment. :)

It was a lot harder to pass my Driver's License test than it was to pass my CHL, yet both are deadly weapons. My thanks in advance to all those who practice and train to a higher level of proficiency.

That is very true probably.

So, who should encourage and push this? The government? Do you think it would ever become a tool for taking more of our money or limiting our freedoms? Think it would ever move to a point where "People over age XX shouldn't drive"?
Or start with a plan to renew for $50 every 5 years... then somehow morph to renew for $300 every 2 years...

And lastly, do you really think the government is capable of truly evaluating whether someone is actually fit to drive? Are they that competent? Think they would be influenced by a person's race or other special interest?

Let's have the private sector push training and self-governance. Don't let it go to the government.
