Houston: Fatal shooting at Worthing High School

#1

Post by seamusTX »

One person was fatally shot and two or more were injured in a shooting on an athletic field at Worthing High School around 6:45 p.m. Wednesday.

Two suspects were taken into custody a short time later.

According to unconfirmed rumors, the incident may have been gang related.

This is breaking news. Any reports may be updated.

Worthing High School is near Scott Street and Reed Road in southeast Houston. I have no information about this neighborhood,

Oh, yeah, and this is already worldwide news.

Google says it's in zip code 77051. Here are some (relative) crime stats for 77051: http://www.clrsearch.com/Houston_Demogr ... Statistics" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Cool statistics engine. Thanks for sharing.

Speaking of statistics, it would be interesting to see shooting statistics in GFZ versus the surrounding areas.

I ran the statistics engine multiple times and was surprised that:

NYC is safer than Houston
LA is only slightly worse than Houston
Houston is safer than Ft. Worth
Atlanta is much worse than Houston.
All of them are much worse than the National average.

In North Carolina, there is a bill in the legislature to allow concealed carry into restaurants and parks. Yes it's currently illegal to carry into a restaurant that serves alcohol in NC. This bill has passed the House but had an amendment that allowed firearms to be banned from municipal parks with athletic fields. Apparently they are concerned that parents might get into a fight over their child's sports and start shooting. Fortunately they got rid of another amendment that would allow the server to ask if one is carrying a firearm. Geez.

Anyway, while tragic, this is a perfect example of why the amendment banning firearms at athletic fields in parks has to go. I've notified folks in NC about this event. Hopefully that amendment will be removed.

Meanwhile, two others with gunshot wounds showed up at a separate hospital. Police say they're possibly suspects who were wounded by a mystery shooter also in the bleachers at the school.

"They said this mystery guy showed up. While the gangbangers were firing into the crowd, another man appeared out of nowhere, produced a pistol and fired in direction of Ford Taurus,"
HPD Homicide Lt. Zitzmann said.
I hope "Mystery man" defending the crowd wasn't a CHL carrying at a school sporting event .... that would be illegal ... if it was, he could lose his license and go to jail or pay fines. Hasn't anyone told him self-defense is not allowed when gangs shoot into crowds at school sporting events? Probably was an off-duty officer LEO who wishes to remain Anonymous. That would be my guess because why would anyone need a gun at a school sporting event?

What shocked me is that my new zip in a 'nice area of Houston' (Memorial) has worse stats than the zip of this high school... which is a known 'bad area' of town.

This is why I carry! I guarantee the people around me think we're in this 'safe' area. The avg income here according to the engine is $116K and the avg home is $330K. 75% have college degrees. This area is being purposely targeted by those from the "not so good" areas of town.

Weell yeah. I grew up in Bellaire, We always went to Memorial to Trick or Treat because you guys had better candy than the poor folks gave out on Halloween.

Armed robbers following people home, Home invaders, Burglars etc prefer people who have stuff than poor people with nothing worth stealing.

Have you seen those soccer moms when someone touches one of their special precious babies, causing them to get a a bump or tiny scratch? How dare they...

If I hadn't slept through statistics class I could show how rates of violent crime correlate with populations density and poverty. In other words, when poor people are crammed into neighborhoods, more crime occurs. Most of it is related to drug dealing and other gang activities.

New York is a special case. Mayor Giuliani practically abolished the fourth amendment there, allowing police to search people on a hunch. The hunches are usually right.

I can almost guarantee that not one person there was carrying a weapon legally. Probably half were underage and the other half were felons.

It wasn't a school event. It was an informal pickup game.

My guess would be that the Mystery Shooter was from the rival gang.

According to KRIV Channel 26, the two people who were taken into custody were released without charges. No suspect is in custody.
