ACTION NEEDED: SB354 Campus Carry
SB354 (Campus-carry) has been reported favorably from committee, but we need everyone's help getting the required 21 votes to bring the Bill to the Senate floor for debate and voting. If it gets there it will pass, but getting 21 votes is a hurdle that must be cleared.
Please call and fax your Senator and ask them to vote to suspend the rules. Also, everyone needs to call Senator Juan "Chuy" Hinojosa's staff at (512) 463-0120 and very politely than them for Senator Hinojosa's years of service to Texas gun owners, but letting them know that SB354 is of critical importance to gun owners. Ask the Senator to vote to suspend the rules, even if he ultimately votes against SB354. To do otherwise is an insult to responsible CHL's who have a fifteen year track record of being the most law-abiding segment of the Texas population. (15 times less likely to commit a crime than the general public; a record far better than Texas peace officers.) We have earned the right to have this Bill debated and voted on the Senate floor.
Again, be polite and get the message across in a nonthreatening manor.
This call-to-action is critical and time sensitive.
Chas.

Is there any point in contacting senators other than our own? I'm in Rodney Ellis's district.

I'm from the district next door to Hinojosa's. They take all calls from all over concerning the issues, so yes, it is important that they hear from people in other places.hirundo82 wrote:Is there any point in contacting senators other than our own? I'm in Rodney Ellis's district.
I just got off the phone with his analyst for this particular bill. Seems the good senator voted with what his constituents wanted, and not his personal beliefs.
He does, according to this fellow, have his CHL (as does the analyst.)
He has an A+ or 100% NRA rating.
The problem is, he was listening to uninformed people. Might be time to fire off a letter to the editor(s) of the three major Valley newspapers.

Re: ACTION NEEDED: SB354 Campus Carry
Called this morning (to Sen. Hinojosa's office) before I read this thread. Person answering the phone told me (albeit politely) to get in touch with Senator Kirk Watson instead (my Senator).
Called Senator Watson's office and registered my opinion. I specifically said that Mr. Bill Powers and anti-gun student organizations do not speak for me, a CHL holder and UT student.
Took it a bit further and called Rep. Naishtat's office (who is historically anti-gun). Clerk said that the Rep does not have an official position on the subject (bull) so I registered my opinion and said the same thing, that anti-gun groups and administrators do not speak for CHL holders.
Called the House Calendars Committee office and politely asked when HB 750 will be expected to be scheduled for a vote on the House floor. Clerk informed me to call Reps Miller and Driver and ask them to put pressure on the Calendars Committee to bring it to a vote on the floor, so I did that instead.
Calling is so much easier when you have Google Voice and can do it from the comfort of your own computer chair, and all you need to do is copy-paste phone numbers on your browser

Re: ACTION NEEDED: SB354 Campus Carry
Driver's office said he's trying his best.
He's been in contact with them repeatedly trying to get it on calendars.
BTW, I got an alert that SB354 has been reported favorably as substituted.
(Edited for question)
Who do we call to get this thing to the Senate floor for a vote?

Senate agenda and intent calendar

Intent calendar
Senate rules require that bills and resolutions be listed on the regular order of business and be considered on second reading in the order in which committee reports on the measures are submitted to the senate. During a regular session, the senate adopts a further rule specifying that before a bill or joint resolution may be brought up for floor debate out of its regular order, notice of intent must be filed with the secretary of the senate by 3 p.m. on the last preceding calendar day the senate was in session. A senator may give notice on no more than three bills or resolutions before April 15 and on no more than five bills or resolutions on or after April 15. Senate rules direct the secretary of the senate to prepare a list of all legislation for which notice has been given.
The list, called the Intent Calendar, must be made available to each senator and to the press not later than 6:30 p.m. on the day the notice is filed. No bill or resolution may be considered on its first day on the Intent Calendar, and a vote of two-thirds of the senators present is required before any of the measures listed on the Intent Calendar may be debated. The senate rules do not require measures to be brought up for consideration in the order listed on the Intent Calendar, and the senate routinely considers only a portion of those measures listed on the Intent Calendar for a given day. A senator must give notice from day to day for a measure that was not brought up for consideration to remain on the Intent Calendar. Any provision of the senate rule governing the Intent Calendar may be suspended by a vote of four-fifths of the members present.
Senate agenda
The senate agenda includes the following information:
notice of intent, giving the number, author or sponsor, and short caption for each measure that may be considered during the day’s session;
list of senate bills returned from the house with amendments;
status of bills in conference committees, giving a short caption and brief history of the action on the bills;
local and uncontested bills calendar;
gubernatorial appointments to boards and commissions that have been reported favorably from the Senate Committee on Nominations and are awaiting confirmation by the senate;
committee hearings scheduled, including short captions for all measures scheduled to be considered by the committees;
regular order of business, listing all bills and resolutions that have been reported favorably from committees in the order in which they were reported to the senate;
miscellaneous announcements;
senate floor action, giving the numbers and short captions for and action taken on all measures brought up for consideration during the previous legislative day;
senate committee action, giving the same information for all measures considered by committees on the previous day; and
morning call, which includes senate and house bills and resolutions on first reading and referral to committee, the introduction and consideration of memorial and congratulatory resolutions, messages and executive communications, and other motions.
Copies of the senate agenda (usually referred to as “green books” because they are printed on green paper) are available the morning of each legislative day.

Isn't the House where the kill is going to come from as before? Sigh, I need to cheer up.
