Status of Campus Carry and Parking Lot (in layman's terms)

In simple terms, the legislature is voting for more violent crime and against self defense.

Well, by and large, I think its fairly easy to see which political party is FOR self-defense and which political party is AGAINST self-defense.

A Democratic majority in the legislature and a Democratic Lt. Governor passed the original campus carry bill.

We're seeing right now what a 65% majority Republican legislature is willing to pass.

I was gone from Texas for many years serving in the USAF and have only been back for about a year now. I am not as educated as I could be on some state historical matters. However, I do know that a lot of the old-time Democrat Party members are not in office anymore, and a very large portion of those who are now have a different mindset than those from the past. When I think of Democrat Party, names that come to mind for me are folks like Barbara Boxer, Barney Frank, Charles Schumer, Nancy Pelosi, Maxine Waters, Carolyn McCarthy, Dick Durbin...and while none of those folks are from Texas, they are some of the leaders of that party. They set the tone...and its their tone on firearms and self-defense that I don't care for...

I really don't want to disagree with our fearless Forum owner but I do have to disagree, and its my opinion not a fact. I think both bills are dead, I will believe it when I see them in the books as a law then expect there to be some way for employers to circumvent the law and that colleges will find someway to do the same. we all agree that these laws will make us safer or give us more freedon to protect ourselves however the bulk of employers and colleges see this not just as a self defense issue or safety either, they see it as a control issue and control freaks will always find a way to remain in control

If they voted against HB750 in committee, they're against us.

If they're on the calendars committee and didn't vote to schedule HB750, they're against us.

If they supported Straus for Speaker this session, after what he did to us last session, they're against us.

The way I figure, there's 25-30 incumbents worth supporting and most of them are in the Senate.

sailed through, a bill to allow "noodling" (catching catfish by hand)..... range protection, campus carry, parking lot bills,
school funding,..... not really important.... lets (legislators) take care of ourselves first SB905, then lets take care
of the "noodlers"...... you know, the REALLY important stuff. So many Rino's...

Keep in mind that the House Criminal Jurisprudence committee removed from the bill provisions covering everyone after the line specifying United States Attorneys and Assistant US Attorneys.

As currently amended, IT DOES NOT INCLUDE state legislators, statewide elected officials etc.

That, of course, is subject to floor amendments, if such is permitted in Local and Consent measures.

P.S. It is certainly gratifying that the 'noodling' bill is gonna make it. Have you seen the PBS programs on it? Very interesting, but I don't think I will avail myself of the new opportunities.

That was the 5/16 version. I can support that version, but I oppose special perks for legislators who killed campus safety.

It was back in committee on 5/19 according to TLO but neither the committee minutes nor video are available yet, so we don't know if other changes were made.

Ugh. I agree. I haven't been in Texas for very long, but it's clear that Straus and Ogden need to go. It's been sickening to watch this whole debacle. We absolutely need to compile a list and start identifying people.

The root cause for losing the Campus Carry Bill is the archane "Blocker Bill" in the state Senate. This rule requires 2/3 vote to bring a bill to the floor for vote. In theory it protects the minority fROMm being railroaded. The first thing the Senate votes on each legislative session are the rules, to include the Blocker Bill.

When Senator Dan Patrick was first elected, he proposed eliminating the Blocker Bill. His vote was the only one in favor. This session he tried again to just lower that threshold to 60% of the Senate (same as required in US Senate to break a filibuster) instead of the 67%. Under the rules, Mario Gallegos was able to block the bill from coming to the floor for a vote. Had we had the 60%, the bill would have come to the floor, and would have passed. The bill has passed the House overwhelmingly so the bill would have gone to the Governor for his signature. Done deal.

When the bill was "killed" by the Blocker Bill, all the subsequent gimmicks (nice try though) just didn't work.

Contact your state Senators and ask them to amend the Blocker Bill next legislative session. A 60% rule will still "protect" the minority party from being railroaded.

Campus Carry didn't pass the House. It was stuck in the Calendar Committee. Even if it had passed the Senate, I'm convinced Calendars still would have killed it by not letting it come to a vote on the House floor. The same thing they did in the last session.
