SKS toys

Its recoil really depends on what you are shooting in it...Lite ball or heavy ball for instance, but they are no worse than the 3 Swiss K31's I have. They pound you really well when shooting off the bench more than you would think they would( especially with K11 service ammo) I find a PAST recoil pad is a good thing to pack in the range bag. I have a East German marked Mosin M44 on layaway that I will pick up in a could of weeks, then its a PU scoped Sniper 91/30 as next to get( made the mistake of rewatching "Enemy At The Gates" lol. But a SKS is on the list of things to get.(allready have AK covered well enough)
A lot of folks dont realize the SKS was the first home of the 7.62x39 M43
cartridge, and a few made it into combat before Germany fell.
The Mosin Nagant cabine fireball (M38 and M44)

My SKS would absolutely be among the first things I grab if anything went awry.
And a very close runner up would be my M44. (I see some of the others have them too! Heck, they made 17 million of them) I can get five rounds out of that gun, aimed, in about 6 seconds. Plus the insane recoil makes me feel more like a man!!
Before I modified my SKS.

Hey Kevin, I assume you do the British Army "Walbridge Method" of fire
(Thumb and forefinger STAY on the bolt knob, MIDDLE finger pulls trigger)...With practice and loaded stripper clips it was expected of a British soldier to achieve 30-35 aimed shots in a minute out of the Enfield in an emergency. I have played around and did a 10 round string
a few times...and it really surprized a few folks that a bolt action could shoot that fast.

Yes, I've emptied quite a few magazines that way, and it's very effective against man-sized targets at 200 yards.p99guy wrote:Hey Kevin, I assume you do the British Army "Walbridge Method" of fire

The ergonomics of the Enfield make it the fastest bolt action rifle ever fielded. It's even faster than the very slick Swiss straight-pulls. (I have a K31 too.)

Those British bolt action rifles are heavy. They seems to have more steel than is needed behind the action and a lot of extra stock up front. But hey, thats just me. That is amazing that they can get off that many rounds in a minute.

I bet the Zulus taught them that that was a good idea ;)p99guy wrote:Hey Kevin, I assume you do the British Army "Walbridge Method" of fire

That's why they have all the extra wood. How'd you like to grab that barrel for a bayonet charge immediately after laying down 30+ rounds of suppressive fire?WheySmart wrote:Those British bolt action rifles are heavy. I believe the record is 37 rounds on target in one minute. The target was a 20" circle at 200 yards, shooting offhand.p99guy wrote:With practice and loaded stripper clips it was expected of a British soldier to achieve 30-35 aimed shots in a minute
I can't recall the name of the fellow who did that. They named the trophy cup after him.
I'll have to poke around in my files to come up with the answer.

You make a very good point, my SKS got pretty hot after about 30 in several minutes...If you kept up that rate for very long it would get hot.KBCraig wrote:

Funny Story,
I was getting my SKS ready to take that picture earlier today when there was a knock on the door. I didn't have a great place to set it down so I went to the door with it, I leaned it up against the doorframe so I wouldn't scare anyone but realized it had been the knockity knock-knock knock knock that my brother always make so, thinking it was my brother, picked it back up while I opened the door. It turned out to actually be our neighbor asking for some firewood...He knows us so although it was a little akward at first it wasn't too bad. He was actually interested in it...the lesson of the day is don't carry battle rifles with bayonet extened to the door.

Correction: Sergeant Snoxall, Royal Army Skill-at-arms instructor, hit a 12" target 38 times in one minute, at a range of 300 yards. Firing was from the prone position.KBCraig wrote:I believe the record is 37 rounds on target in one minute. The target was a 20" circle at 200 yards, shooting offhand.
The "Lord Roberts Match", as it's called, is still fired when bolt action shooters congregate.
I've seen one reference to the record being called the "Hythe trophy".
