It's a reflection of the level of fear among the population in this country, that TSA is allowed to act in an increasingly oppressive, unchecked fashion, without opposition. Unfortunately, that also means that this sickening corruption of power will only get worse; what will be the new travesty in 2012? Not a first in history; this is truly identical to how things developed in the 30's, and not just in Germany. It looks as if this treatment is in the U.S. to stay, and my fear is now for this country. I don't believe it's any "conspiracy," but rather a totally unchecked well-meaning meritocracy (put the "merit" in quotes for me, please).
This is also not really new in this country, of course. Just in the past 50 years, except for the recent personal nature of the TSA offenses, the EPA and DOT are proof of how bureaucratic oppression can continue just because the population "knows it's for their own good." This comparison is not a stretch; for these groups, they really see no difference between checking for lead paint and checking for scissors, using any type of invasive procedures they feel are required.
I still believe treating me as a criminal will not keep me any safer, whether in the airport or at the auto safety inspection, but that's just me, I guess. Granted, TSA personnel keep telling me "it keeps the bad guys away." Some of my friends in a similar service simply chuckle when they hear that....
Sorry if I went over the top on this one.
I'll go back into my rabbit hole.

I got fed up with the TSA this past weekend and it resulted in them calling the police on me, even though they admitted I had not broken any laws. I can't wait to hear back from the ACLU...those are words I never thought I would utter.OldSchool wrote:<rant>

I have just about made up my mind I'm never gonna fly again unless it's to Hawaii, and I'm not even sure I will do that. It doesn't even bother me to get scanned or patted down, it's just the fact that they can do it that bothers me.

I'm not an ardent conspiracy theorist but I do believe the the TSA policies are more about subjugation than about airline safety. The mission is to train us for absolute compliance and I'm not going to be part of it if there is anyway possible to avoid participation.glbedd53 wrote:I have just about made up my mind I'm never gonna fly again unless it's to Hawaii, and I'm not even sure I will do that. There is no other rational explanation for conducting extensive searches of sick 95 year old American women traveling with their daughters. This is a teaching moment: we're being taught who the boss is. If that wasn't the case, orders would have come down from on high not to do things that generate negative publicity like this. Can you imagine Microsoft or Wal-Mart seeking this kind of publicity? They want us to know that they can and will do anything. Every time there is any public opposition they push it up a notch. The question is: what more outrageous act can they perpetrate next to let us know our place?
The mere fact of the government doing this could probably be changed, but with a population of people who actually defend this sickening behavior, we may well be doomed.

Sadly - for the future of our country - I completely agree with all three of you.VMI77 wrote:chasfm11 wrote:I'm not an ardent conspiracy theorist but I do believe the the TSA policies are more about subjugation than about airline safety. Re: This is way to far TSA
while i hate that this poor woman had to endure what she did, i have to say - i can somewhat understand where the TSA is coming from.
we live in turbulent times, without a doubt and with all the attempts by fanatic groups to take innocent lives, we're starting to understand that there are 'no holds barred' when it comes to acts of violence. how many stories of women and children loaded up like pack mules with high explosives and detonated have you read?
if they discover a way through, they'll exploit it.
i agree with you guys who are saying that the TSA is sending a message... i don't think that message is intended for us, though - i think it's directed toward any would be wrong doers.

As casual observers of the screening process, we have all seen elderly people and children singled out for extra inspection. If they have lax inspection of those groups, the TSA is afraid that elderly people or children will be used by terrorists to smuggle bomb making materials on to planes.
However, it seems the real target group that the terrorists should try as their couriers is the part of the population who are younger single males, traveling on one way cash tickets, with foreign passports, who appear muslim in dress or looks. Due to the appearance that it would be discriminatory to examine them, this group seems to get the least examination of all classes of airline passengers.

I must assume that you have a citable and genuinely credible source for your unqualified statement of fact I emphasized above. May we see it? If not, I must assume you do not have one, but sure as the world in this cyber-age your statement will be in turn quoted, "but I saw it on the Internet."philip964 wrote:As casual observers of the screening process, we have all seen elderly people and children singled out for extra inspection. If you think for one minute that TSA has or is going to stop a terrorist threat at the airport, IMO you have way too much faith in the out of control government. TSA is for show.schufflerbot wrote:while i hate that this poor woman had to endure what she did, i have to say - i can somewhat understand where the TSA is coming from.
