I just want to get this taken care of so I can feel like a whole person again and not like a second class citizen. I am also wondering if I should try and purchase a firearm first then try for the CHL or the other way around.
Well, I wouldn't try to purchase one until you're sure the Feds have gotten the updated info and had time to process it into their system, as it might return a hit on NICS until they do. Thats the good thing about the CHL, once you get it, no more phone-in NICS checks to worry about :thumbs2:

You could look into purchasing a used firearm from someone on the forums, at a gun show, or a site like TexasGunTrader for a face to face transaction. Private party sales are the preferred method for purchasing firearms for some people precisely because they do not require a call to Uncle Sam for permission, and some people just do not like the government to know anything that they're doing/how many firearms they own.

Just be aware that being a 'felon in possession' of a firearm is a crime of it's own, and if it shows that you were convicted of a felony in the officer's system, whether expunged yet or not, they're going to treat it that way until it gets sorted out. If I were you, I'd carry around a copy of that 'set aside' paperwork with me, at least until I am 99% certain it doesn't show up anywhere anymore.

I got ya, I would just like the peace of mind knowing for a fact that I can buy one with an NCIS check. After that I will probably do the face to face so when the men in black come around confiscating guns there will only be one on their list. Hehehehe....

That's a completely valid feeling, and I understand :)

You can go and try to purchase one, they're not going to send the black vans and choppers if it comes back denied, or on a waitlist. The worst that can happen is they say 'no', and then you know, it's not sorted yet, the best, well, you get a shiney new firearm! :thumbs2:

Does anyone have any experience with how long the FBI takes to update their system? Thanks in advance! :headscratch

I just re ran the check and it now says no arrests. The lady told me the only folks that will see the arrest and deferred adj is government agencies. Now I will wait a week or so and try an ncis check. I am so exited that my second chance is for real. :patriot:

Good for you buddy, it's time to go get you a gun now. It's been a while since your post, I was wondering if it worked out or not?

I just signed up for the CHL class for next Saturday. After that I wait for the next paycheck to pay the DPS part, I have the online app filled out, I just need the funds. Then I need to get one certified disposition doc and then start getting photos and finger prints going.

Question on the disposition docs.

I have the "Order Setting Aside Judgement and Discharging From Community Supervision" Paper. It is not certified so I will need another copy from them. What other docs would I need from the District Clerk?

I was so lucky when I decided to go through all of this. I just happened to be sitting on enough spare cash to buy a couple of guns, tons of books, memberships to way too many things, thousands of rounds of ammo, and the cost of everything CHL related. If I had to start over today, it would take me a year to get the extra funds together. I understand your pain!
