Well, I wouldn't try to purchase one until you're sure the Feds have gotten the updated info and had time to process it into their system, as it might return a hit on NICS until they do. Thats the good thing about the CHL, once you get it, no more phone-in NICS checks to worry aboutCool Arrow wrote:Thanks dicion for the advise, my buddy has one of those 1911's and it is nice! To rich for me at this time but I will get me one, one of these days. I just want to get this taken care of so I can feel like a whole person again and not like a second class citizen. I am also wondering if I should try and purchase a firearm first then try for the CHL or the other way around.

You could look into purchasing a used firearm from someone on the forums, at a gun show, or a site like TexasGunTrader for a face to face transaction. Private party sales are the preferred method for purchasing firearms for some people precisely because they do not require a call to Uncle Sam for permission, and some people just do not like the government to know anything that they're doing/how many firearms they own.
Just be aware that being a 'felon in possession' of a firearm is a crime of it's own, and if it shows that you were convicted of a felony in the officer's system, whether expunged yet or not, they're going to treat it that way until it gets sorted out. If I were you, I'd carry around a copy of that 'set aside' paperwork with me, at least until I am 99% certain it doesn't show up anywhere anymore.
