Re: HELP! my XD is broken
I don't think I'd feel comfortable carrying a gun that was known to be broken. I don't know how the XD grip safety works internally, but I could imagine a situation where a loose spring or piece of a spring gets into the wrong place and causes other, more serious problems.lunchbox wrote:ok so im a bit of a procrastinator. Re: HELP! my XD is broken
Rule of thumb.... NEVER "bubba" a carry weapon. That said, a number of Texas Rangers back in the day used to wrap a piece of wet leather around their 1911 grips so that when the the leather shrank, it would keep the grip safety permanently depressed. (They would sometimes also have a gunsmith remove the trigger guard, relying only on the thumb safety to keep the cocked weapon from discharging. As I recall, your XD doesn't have a thumb safety.) After a lot of these old boys had retired, some of them still liked to show up for their annual pistol requalifications, even though it was no longer necessary. One of them showed up with one such modified 1911 and the young RSO wouldn't let him use it to qualify with, asking "don't you think that gun is dangerous?" ......To which the old boy responded, "Heck yes it's dangerous. I wouldn't carry it otherwise!"BrianSW99 wrote:I don't think I'd feel comfortable carrying a gun that was known to be broken. Now, I'm in no way recommending you carry your XD that way. Like that old Texas Ranger said, it's dangerous. And I'm not counting on any of us to be as self assured with a firearm as any of them were.....and some of them might have been just a little bit crazy.....in a good way....but not made of the same stuff as the rest of us. In other words, I would STRONGLY recommend that you leave that gun unloaded and in the safe until such time as you can ship it back to SA for repairs. They should be covering the repairs and the freight, and you'll find that their customer service is very responsive.

lunchbox:
The opinion has been expressed by several people above that they would not want to carry a broken gun.
No one has expressly stated this, though: Consider what would happen if you had to defensively use your ghetto'd-up,
safety-electrical-taped handgun during an armed encounter with a BG.
If a round went astray and hit an innocent party, how good do you think your legal position would be when the police
report details that a factory safety was altered in such a fashion? Your integrity as a safety-minded shootist would be
assailed by the other side's lawyer. Not good.
A properly operating grip safety on an XD is the reason that we don't have a common symptom called "Springfield Armory XD leg",
unlike some other brand associated with self-perforating one's leg. :-)

No, I don't think it's "Kimber leg". Based on the peanut gallery's responses, this was a case of "Blackhawk Serpa leg."

Re: HELP! my XD is broken
The incident that apostate refers to is actually the result of poor equipment design (Holster) and an inability to follow the four rules. The real issue I have with carrying a firearm that has broken, and been rendered serviceable with southern engineering, is more complex. Firearms contain many small and precisely made/fitted parts, broken parts tend to be smaller than the parts they come from and get into places where Mr. Murphy can better use them against the shooter when they need the weapon to work. Broken parts can also be an indicator of other, even more serious, issues that should be corrected immediately. Moving on from there disabling the grip safety configures most XD handguns (and all XDm versions) so that they have precisely the same safety features as a Glock, or similar firearms, which are perfectly safe when handled properly. Now some .45ACP XD pistols also feature a thumb safety giving the user an additional level of protection. My advice is to contact Springfield and have the gun fixed properly.
How do you explain a dog named Sauer without first telling the story of a Puppy named Sig?

This is a point very well taken and a very serious issue.surprise_i'm_armed wrote:lunchbox:

There's no reason at all to leave the gun broken.
Springfield Armory will send you a prepaid shipping tag, repair it, and send it back prepaid as well in a very short time. There will be no cost to you at all, unless you count the box you use and the package tape.
All you need to do is call.

Call the customer service number on their website, and tell them that you need a warranty repair. They will make sure you speak to the right person.lunchbox wrote:do I call the regular customer service line or some other repair line??
Go to http://www.springfield-armory.com/contactus.php, and use the phone number listed there.

I wonder what happened to the piece[s] of that part that broke inside my gun.
I can fix anything with just a metal coat hanger and a roll of "duck" tape. The Annoyed Man wrote:"Southern Engineering!" Well stated, Mr. Heath.
