Why no city operated ranges?

I beg to differ. On good weather day, hundreds of shooters are lined up on range that I used to visit, Garlands Public Range The word "Public" is goofy, it is privately owned and managed business.

I presume they mean public in the sense that it's open to the public, as opposed to a private club.

Ranges are not big money.

That and liability.

Also, I'd not go to gov anything if there was a privet option.

IIrc Texas City has the last city owned range in the state...only problem is that it's a "flat range".
shooting only from the bench or standing beside the bench...zero movement.
And it is certainly a liabillity issue involved on many aspects of a city owned shooting range.

Public libraries aren't money makers. Public parks aren't money makers, even if they have a baseball diamond or a soccer pitch. Public schools teaching US History in Spanish definitely isn't a money maker.

incorrect thankfully.....ours is city owned, its LE only Mon, Tues, Wed, and Thurs until noon, open to all the other days
100 yd and 200 yd rifle range
25 yard shotgun/pistol range
all with target stands, steel plates on 25yd range, and gongs on 100 and 200 range
2 separate LE only ranges
have to take written safety test and pay either for day or year membership
sell ammo, targets, and rent spotting scopes

How about County ranges? While visiting Las Vegas, NV., took advantage of easy access and registration to do some inexpensive trap shooting, under the lights, at the Clark County Shooting Range. Just take a photo I.D., watch their Safety video, sign their Safety waiver, abide the rules and "pull"! Superb layout, congenial "hosts", and AWESOME view. Wish we had as nice a facility in Montgomery County, though "sporting clays" at Creekwood are fun.

Texas City has a pretty nice range. I was shocked to hear that it is run by the city. Most government run services tend to fall well short of their potential but T.C. does a pretty good job on this service.
