When D-day comes, I'm going to TAM's house.
He was suspiciously short in his one and only post in this thread.

It is a long walk to my house here in VA from TX and we will have enough problems with the mass exodus out of DC and northern VA, so I thank you for not coming here.USA1 wrote:KC5AV wrote:I can't resist.

Sorry, but if TAM's not home, your next on my list.mamabearCali wrote:It is a long walk to my house here in VA from TX and we will have enough problems with the mass exodus out of DC and northern VA, so I thank you for not coming here.USA1 wrote:KC5AV wrote:I can't resist.

I'll be the guy on horseback being chased by Zombies, so don't shoot.
On second thought, I'll probably just hunker down here.

Re: Any other "preppers"?
That's not a good plan. I'm one of those who started on this later in life. Other members are much further along than I am, and part of my problem is that I haven't had as much money to devote to it as I would have liked. Coming from California, we always had an "earthquake kit" which consisted of long-storage food items like freeze-dried camping foods and MREs, large water jugs, a decent first aid kit, over-the-counter analgesics and antihistamines, portable shelter (our camping tents and sleeping bags, as well as a pop-up trailer), a month's worth of prescription drugs which I have to take; a small amount of ammo and a pistol, flashlights and batteries, and a hand-crank AM/FM radio.USA1 wrote:KC5AV wrote:I can't resist.

When we moved to Texas, it was normal for us to consider these things, and it didn't really matter if we were preparing for earthquakes or tornadoes, the preparations are essentially the same. But in the meantime, some of the things we had stockpiled were either past their shelf-life or approaching it, and we either consumed or disposed of them. Those things have still to be replaced. I have since added a respectable reloading setup, partly because ammo would have value as currency in any kind of societal collapse. I keep meaning to buy some junk silver, but some other need keeps coming up. I already have all the guns I need (but not all the guns I want ). Transportation is more or less taken care of.....I very deliberately bought a 4WD vehicle, and we have some rugged bicycles. One thing I would like to buy is ONE OF THESE trailers. Outfitted the way I would want it, it runs just under $20K, but it will go anywhere my 4X can go. I am also working on putting together bugout/bugin bags for each of us. Right now, most preparations are behind simply for lack of money, but it is a work in progress.
Lastly, my long term plan is to buy a largish piece of property with a home on it, and begin outfitting that home to get it off the grid—partly because I'd like to have a certain amount of self-reliance capacity, and partly just to live more economically. The above mentioned 4X and the trailer are just part of the plan to get to the land, and then to be able to function and have mobility once we get there.
So, I have some things done, but large parts of the picture still need to be filled in. My house might not be the best place to fall back on right now, but I'm working on it. If the fit hits the shan before I'm ready, I'm loading up and high-balling for Tomball. I hope you have room for two.

Alright you can come--you got a-lot of land to cross before you get here (bout 1500 miles), just be willing to stand a post to defend my tomato plants against marauding deer/rabbits.

I know what a bugout bag is (I think), but what is a bugin bag?The Annoyed Man wrote:I am also working on putting together bugout/bugin bags for each of us.

Re: Any other "preppers"?
You're at work, and your boss turns into a werewolf right in front of you and tries to eat you. You empty your 5 shot deeply concealed snubbie at him with no real effect, but it sets him back long enough that you shove a big heavy desk against him, pushing him through the floor to ceiling window 25 stories up. When you make it to the parking lot, it's full of zombies and you're out of ammo. Fortunately, these ones are newly made, and they're not very fast. You make it to your car, get your bugin bag out of the trunk, which contains everything you'll need to be able to survive the ride home to get get your family and then bugout with them.Dave2 wrote:I know what a bugout bag is (I think), but what is a bugin bag?The Annoyed Man wrote:I am also working on putting together bugout/bugin bags for each of us.
Does that explain it?

I had hoped this would turn into a serious discussion. AS with most posts of this nature, it turns to junk. Later guys...

Dude, chill. It is a serious discussion. I apologize if I offended you by injecting a little humor into an answer to a legitimate question, so as to make that answer more entertaining to the guy who asked.BigPa wrote:I had hoped this would turn into a serious discussion. Next time, I'll try to sound all dry and boring and stuff. Have a nice day.

What happens if I'm self-employed and I turn into a werewolf. Do I have to shoot myself? Can't I just stay out of the full moon and roam around looking for a cure for a while? The Annoyed Man wrote:You're at work, and your boss turns into a werewolf right in front of you and tries to eat you. Yes, that does explain it, thanks
And it reminds me... I need to toss out that bag of beef jerky that's been in my backseat for two years, and see if I can find a gas can to keep in the trunk that doesn't leak fumes and stink up the car.

I think anyone living on the gulf coast should be prepared to take care of themselves from 3 days to 2 weeks with out any outside help, and I'm not talking about eating spam and beenie weenies for 2 weeks, with a little effort of buying double what you normally buy when it's on sale and adding it to your pantry rotation, buying another bottle of propane for the gas grill, little things add up..

All good stuff there. Few of us have the resources to do as much as we'd like, but it doesn't take much to pick up two cans of vegetables every time you need one. Don't overlook real basics when you're just getting started. For example, 50# each of beans and rice won't set you back an arm and a leg, doesn't take much room to store, and will make a lot of meals. It will add up quicker than you think.
Be creative with storage, and you'll find you have lots more room than you think. Just as an example, I have several large bookshelves. The space BEHIND the books is filled with food items! Doesn't hurt to be a little deceptive, either. Several old boxes in the corner of a storeroom with labels like "books", "old toys", "save for garage sale" etc. will be more likely to survive a burglary/scavenging raid/whatever than clearly labelled cases of MREs or shrink-wrapped flats of canned goods.
