Comments on Ruger SR9c and Taurus 709 slim

I have both SR9 and SR9c. The SR9c is the much sweeter gun, mild recoil & very accurate, cc easily with the shorty mag.

Has she considered the Ruger LC9? Same size (slim frame, single-stack magazine) as the Taurus 709.

I enjoy my SR9c a great deal. I have big hands as well, so the normal SR9 magazines with the extension or the 10-round compacts with the pinky extender both make it more pleasant to shoot for accuracy at the range, but it sits deep in the palm of my hand and doesn't flip much with the flush compact mag. It's very comfortable to conceal IWB; I use a Galco made for a Glock 19 which works perfectly (I couldn't find a SR9c specific holster in person, and I don't buy holsters online unless I've tried them out first hand).

I'm actually in the market for a 709, or a Ruger LC9, or a Keltec subcompact 9mm-ish type pistol. The 709 has a better trigger than the LC9 as I measure things, but I like the LC9 more overall. However, I'm not a fan of being an early adopter, so I haven't gotten either. I might end up with a Kahr CW9 for the sake of a more proven track record than the other options.

I am usually the first person to recommend Ruger products, and indeed, I really like the SR9c I own...but I would NOT buy that LC9. I am so glad I got to fire a friend's LC9 before I went and dropped hard to come by money on one. That trigger pull is disgusting. I understand that most DAO pistols have a STRONG trigger pull, but with the LC9, it feels like the pistol is never going to fire and then, right as it hits the very end of travel, BANG. Maybe if they could do something about that trigger, I would like it better, but as it stands now, no way. YMMV.

Thanks for the input! I haven't gotten on the firing line with one yet, but I was underwhelmed by the LC9 trigger in the gun store by that very thing you mention. I love my LCP, and for the life of me, I can't figure out why they didn't copy the LCP trigger over verbatim in the design schematics. The search shall continue...

I have an SR9c and it is one of the best shooting pistols I have ever owned. Like a lot of the comments here
I highly recommend the SR9 or the SR 9c.

Definitely go with the Ruger. I had a PT709 for about a year and after less than 100 rounds the FTF's and FTE's started. As mentioned above the trigger is terrible. I thought my Kel Tec trigger was long but I really appreciate it more after the Taurus. I've read on other forums where the 709's frame has actually cracked.

I know Tauras has a bad reputation, but like everything else, there are good ones and bad ones. I have a 709 slim and use it as my edc if not carrying my RIA compact 1911 . It has been a very dependable gun and is more than accurate for the job intended and is very comfortable to conceal IWB. I know there are a lot of bad stories out there, but if look hard enough, there are stories about every manufacturer, just the way it is, they are a mechanical device and subject to failure.

Every manufacturer has some percentage of guns with quality issues. What matters the most is having a manufacturer that you know will stand behind their product if you happened to get a problem gun.

Hence my earlier comment about Taurus's poor reputation for customer service. I understand your current handgun is a "good one", but that is meaningless when making the decision to purchase the next firearm if you cannot rely upon customer service to take care of you.

After I read my reply regarding the LC9 earlier in this thread, I just wanted to make sure that folks understand I am a supporter of Ruger products in general. I own the SR9c, the Vaquero single-action in .357, an old P89 that was the first handgun I bought (with 10 round "Clinton" mags), and a Mini-14, series 580 (that I am giving to my son). I want to buy a 10-22 sometime in the future. I like ALL of those products. They are reliable and solid. And I wanted to like that LC9...its just that trigger. I haven't fired a lot of those little DAO pistols, so maybe ALL of them are like that, or similar. If that is the case, I'd just as soon stick with SAO like the 1911, a DA/SA like my P89, or a striker fired like the SR9c. Anyway, just wanted to add a little clarity about what I said.

Don't know about their customer service, have never had to use them, but again there are some who say it is great and others who say it's terrible, kind of depends on who you want to listen to . Having said that it wouldn't have any bearing on buying another Taurus if it was a great deal. But then again I'm the type of guy that WILL NOT send food back at a resturant for any reason, if I don't like it I just don't eat it, but it's not not going back.

I've had no problems with Taurus and a repair. I had to send my 24/7 on earlier this year and it was back within 10 days. My Beretta Neos that had the trigger bar break after 100 rounds took over 3 months.

Ditto that, plus I would look at the Kahr CW9 and CW45. My wife has a Glock 19 and a CW9, and she vastly prefers the CW9. It has nothing to do with quality of manufacture, and everything to do with fitting her hand better and being easier for her to shoot well.

Also, the Kel-Tec PF9 is fairly highly regarded, and considerably less expensive than all of those other pistols you've mentioned.

The Ruger SR9C may be an excellent pistol. I've never shot one. But I can tell you from handling one that it is significantly heavier than the Kahrs or the Kel-Tec.....and for all day carry, that can make a huge difference—particularly if your wife is on the petite side.

I have shot both. I shot SR9C a while back and my husband owns the 740 slim. The 740 is okay (just the .40 cal) version of the 709 and I much prefer the SR9c. It's so light and felt awesome in my hands. I actually own the Kahr CW45 and love it. We are getting ready to go rent the SR40C tomorrow.

Also, Taurus comes with a lifetime warranty ad door to door pick up and delivery. What "horrible" customer service should I worry about?
