Should I, or Shouldn't I...? Black Talon

#1

Post by Limey Hooligan »

So I managed to snag some old Winchester Supreme Black Talon DP rounds in .45 auto from "a friend of a friend". Given the bad reputation of the round, but still wanting to make use of it's devestating abilities, I've decided not to use it in my carry weapon but to use it at home at the bedside. My reasoning is, in an HD situation it's a lot more cut and dried as to innocence, and my chances of getting criminally charged are much less than if I have to use my weapon in public and the words "Black Talon cop-killing armor piercing rounds" come up in court.

Does this make good sense, or should I just stay away from making use of the Black Talon altogether?

Cheers.

All the hype about the Black Talon was media driven. In it's day the Black talon was an adequate round but there were, even then, better ones available. The "king" of .45 ACP at that time was the Federal Hydra Shok the Black Talon was #3 or 4 if IRRC. If the "talons" are what intrigues you buy some Winchester Ranger Talon ammo it's a newer design that has better performance.

Cartridge collectors will pay big bucks for full boxes of Black Talon and pretty good for loose rounds. If I had a box of BT I would put it on a firearms auction site with a reserve of $50. :thumbs2:

Not a bad idea, the box and ammo are both in very good condition, with styrofoam intact:

I talked to a GunStoreExpert who "informed" me that the 'Talons had a different "petalling" that made them "extra deadly" cause when they opened up they had better "talons" than the new SXTs.
AND
the black coating was a lubricant to make them feed better.

I love gun shops. I "learn" so much...
FWIW, IIRC, AFAIK, FTMP, IANAL. YMMV.

just doesn't have the black coloring.

rumor has it that the SXT stands for Same 'xact Thing. .. just packaged in a more friendly package so not to rile the fiends of the media..
Last time I was looking they are just known as the Ranger T-series. No mention of talon at all.

Allows them to penetrate body armor, If thats true then its a better bullet then most give it credit for. Those bullets are worth alot of money. The problem is you cant sell them its illegal. You can own them though. Have seen certain calibers sell for 5 to 10 dollars a shot CRAZY.

Sounds dubious to me. Can you cite the statute?

Correct, I agree.

After the original Black Talon PR nightmare, Winchester has gone to great pains to avoid all reference to the "talon" word. BTW, those little expanded arms are called a "petal" now, and most definitely not a "talon".

...love the Texas Rangers...but it's not illegal to buy or sell Black Talons...or any ammo marked "Law Enforcement Only"...that's all marketing...bought plenty of Gold Dots marked "Law Enforcement Only"...only armor piercing rounds are prohibited in Texas law...PC46.01(12)...
