It depends on how hard you hit them with it.

An upate on the infamous McDonald's Transgender beating incident: Woman Sentenced To 5 Years In McDonald’s Transgender Attack.
Convicted of a hate crime and first degree assault. Five years in prison.

Over and over again, two teenage girls attack and beat Chrissy Polis inside a Baltimore County McDonalds until she goes into a seizure — all while a laughing McDonald’s employee records the vicious attack on his cell phone.

The Youtube video sparked community outrage and landed 19-year-old Teonna Brown and her 14-year-old accomplice in jail. Brown now sentenced to five years in prison.
The old lady who saved her also appeared in court:
Polis, who is transgender, chose not to appear in court for the sentencing. But her hero Vicki Thoms was.

“I just wanted to make sure that justice was served,” Thoms said.

She can be seen in the video trying to stop the attack on Polis. She ending up punched in the eye herself.

“I thought she was going to die,” Thoms said.

For having beat someone to the point to where they start seizing I think the punishment should have been much more severe.

Your county DA is an elected official who wants your vote. You can call him or her and ask how these plea bargains and sentences are arrived at. This case was in Maryland, but the math is similar.

I don't necessarily like the situation, but cost-benefit calculations take place all the time.

Lovely. After five (or more likely two or three), she'll be out to offend again. She'll probably do a better job the next time after getting lessons from her fellow losers in the pen.

More on topic, this is a perfect case where pepper spray might have been an asset. I used to carry it in addition to my carry gun, knife and flashlight. I've gotten away from that, but this makes me reconsider. There are plenty of instances where the threat to you or others may rise to the level where action is needed, but the not to the level where deadly force is called for.

More to the point, I think, is mental preparedness. Any able-bodied person can gouge out an eye or cause near-heart failure with his or her (or whatever) bare hands, elbows, and heels. It doesn't take years of ninja training.

Do these sort of things happen at Wendy's or Popeye's? They are our favorite fast food joints. I'm always armed but I don't want to be interrupted when I'm eatin'.

Yeah, sure, why not?
I am not a lawyer, nor have I played one on TV, nor did I stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night, nor should anything I say be taken as legal advice. If it is important that any information be accurate, do not use me as the only source.

I think we see more news about this kind of incident at McDonald's (and Walmart) because of their market share. There simply are more stores, and more people go to them.

Also, I get the impression that there are more McDonald's in dodgy neighborhoods, and they are open later at night. I can't verify that statistically. I tried.

I think this would have still made the news even if it had happened at a mom and pop service station.
I don't think that because it happened at a Mickey D's had anything to do with it surfacing in the news.

There were two separate incidents at different McDonald's in different cities.

IMHO, both became news because of the Youtube factor, with disgusting video made by spectators. TV eats up that kind of garbage and regurgitates it.

No argument there.....bad new, sex, drugs and scandals are what sells, not cute fluffy positive pieces with happy endings....and I hate that about the media.

Everyone says this, but everyone reads the same newspapers and watches the same TV channels—including me.

There is not a fluff-bunny and cute kitten and puppy newspaper, simply because there is no market for it. There is only a rather small market for inspirational stories, and even those seem to contain salacious details about how low someone fell before getting straight.
