Old Eyes and Old Guns
I hope all the young bucks appreciate their eyesight and reflexes.
Any good 1911 shooter should be able to shoot 3" groups at 25 yards, right?
So, I tried shooting the '74 Commander at 25 yds. for the first time today.
The fading light is no excuse, either.
32 rounds, slow fire, offhand

Re: Old Eyes and Old Guns
Not that bad shooting. There a many other factors besides eye sight that determines group size. Not all guns, including many 1911's are all that accurate, nor is it necessary for a personal defense gun. Has anyone else tried that pistol?
FWIW, Without a rest I can usually hold between 2 and 3 inch groups with my .22 Ruger 22/45 using the iron sights but I'm lucky to keep under 6" at 25 yards with my 3rd gen S&W. But my 3rd gen has digested any ammo I've fed it. As long as I can shoot minute of bad guy groups with absolute reliability, I'm happy.

Yes, a young buck has shot the old Commander and drove nails with it.
Those three hits on the "A" tell me it can, indeed, be done.

Re: Old Eyes and Old Guns
...for a light, short-barrelled pistol, that ain't shabby at all...and at 25 yards, you're not going to be making head shots with most pistols unless you're resting it on something...in a defensive situation, 25 yards is a long ways off...by the looks of that target...any shot you took would have gone a long ways towards stopping the threat(well, that ONE might have just given him a "Do I really wanna BE here moment)...I'd go treat yerself to a banana split and clean yer weapon!!!
Re: Old Eyes and Old Guns
I'll go ahead and say that I think that is outstanding shooting for offhand at 25 yds.
Really wouldn't have been that bad with strong hand at 25 yds either.
I concur. A banana split is in order!

Doc,
All rounds were basically COM. You got your point across.

Doc, Doc, Doc - - - your pics of your target are well within "one minute of bad guy" at 25 yards (75feet) unless he's actually shooting at you or charging with a edged weapon or striking weapon shooting someone at that distance would be reeeeal hard to justify.
Good shootin' by the way keep it up!

Re: Old Eyes and Old Guns
I couldn't even see the "A" at 25 yards, and I'd be happy with hitting the target "COM." The most accurate pistol I own is a Model 29 revolver. I can hit a pig silhouette at 100 yards with it, but I can't tell you for sure where I would hit it.doc540 wrote:Yes, a young buck has shot the old Commander and drove nails with it.

Re: Old Eyes and Old Guns
Excellent shooting. I hope I can do that well the next time I go out. One of my eyes is 58 years old. The other is probably that old, too, but it's in denial.
I've been slacking a bit, and now there is 6" of snow on the ground. If there is too much snow, I can't get up the hill to the range even with 4WD. I can go to another range 25 mi away if I need to, or go back in my field about 1000 feet and shoot there, but I have to walk thru the snow and drag all the stuff with me. Right now, it is freshly planted with wheat and would be a muddy mess to walk thru.
