One problem with that report is that neither Puerto Rico nor the US Virgin Islands are "nations". They are United States territory, and thus should have been counted in as part of the overall rate for the nation...which wouldn't even made a blip of a jump in our rate. Good old UN, making up definitions of things and getting stuff WRONG as usual. I wonder which ACTUAL countries would have made the list if those two were taken out?AndyC wrote:Read more: http://www.businessinsider.com/1homicid ... es-2011-11#" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; The United Nations just put together their Global Study on Homicide 2011, an extensive report detailing each country's homicide rate and the factors that brought them there.
Globally, there were 468,000 murders in 2010, giving the world an average of 6.9 murders per 100,000 people. But more than a third of these homicides took place in Africa, and slightly lower percentages took place in the Americas and Asia.

Still is interesting to know that PR has a higher murder rate than Ethiopia.
And the USVI is in the "Top" 10... that's awful. I've been there.
Not something to be proud about.
I don't have an opinion one way or the other about aggregating their data with the rest of the US...
And I don't have any expectations of the NU being any kind of impartial.
EDIT: My BIL invited us to share a beach house in Belize during spring break next March. Unfortunately, we are on different spring break schedules so it didn't work out (house would have been free!).. Well... now I see why the house was free. Belize is #6 on this ominous list. There's some excellent SCUBA diving in Belize.... Didn't realize the crime was so bad.

As long as you stay in the "touristy" part of Belize, the Cayes, or down in Placencia, Belize is not so bad. The Belize City and Belmopan areas are places to stay away from, especially at night.RoyGBiv wrote:My BIL invited us to share a beach house in Belize during spring break next March. Are they actually taking ALL countries into their census? I think that there are more murders in other countries. How about Asia, Middle Eastern countries… I don’t know… just sayin’ Murder is murder.

Well I have been to St. Kitts and found it charming. I've been to St Thomas and PR too. But, didn't go out at night in any of these places.
However, I can't even imagine planning a trip to Africa let alone going there.
Mexico didn't make the list?
In how many of these countries are handguns illegal?
Is there a relationship?

Alarming considering I've vacationed in Honduras and Belize- all during the same Cruise Trip!

Re: The 20 Most Homicidal Countries In The World
Spent a little time on the internet and this is what I found concerning gun ownership in the top 5 of the above list.
Honduras - requires license which includes class requirements and registration
El Salvador -requires license which includes background check and registration
Corte d’Lvoire - registration of gun owners
Jamaica - licensing, registration, limit on number of guns and a 50 round per year ammo limit. licensing requirement includes 3rd party references.
Venezuela, civilians are not allowed to possess machine guns, sub-machine guns, carbines, pistols and revolvers, be they automatic or semi-automatic. Civilians are only authorized to hold .22 rifles and shotguns
From the above it looks like registration and licensing of firearms really does work, but not in the way the anti's say it does.

Re: The 20 Most Homicidal Countries In The World
The countries have changed a little since the last time I saw this, but in general one conclusion is still the same. They all have very restrictive firearms/weapons laws.AndyC wrote:Read more: http://www.businessinsider.com/1homicid ... es-2011-11#" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; The United Nations just put together their Global Study on Homicide 2011, an extensive report detailing each country's homicide rate and the factors that brought them there.

Leads one to believe more restrictive laws lead to higher homicide rates. Of course in most of them I would also add rebellion and abject poverty as highly contributory circumstances.

More guns in private hands equal less crime.

How is Mexico not on that list with all the drug cartel murders occurring?

Surprised to see Zambia on the list with worse results than South Africa . . . and given the unpleasantness of the past 10 years or so, where the heck is Zimbabwe?
