Camping suggestions

Looks like it's going to be a great weekend for camping. Looking for suggestions as close to Austin as possible. Would love a little hiking with VERY primitive and private camping. Nothing owned by the corps, because I will be carrying.

I'm really fond of Lost Maples near Bandera. Great primitive camping and even better hiking! There is a burn ban in effect last time I was there, call to make sure, otherwise, propane cooking is allowed. Enjoy the weekend!

Thanks for the suggestion. Looks like a beautiful spot, but a bit too far @ 200 miles from me. I'll keep it in mind for when I have a longer weekend. Thanks!

Inks lake is very nice. Its north of Austin (about 40 minutes depending on where you are coming from).

Enchanted Rock and Hill Country State Natural Area offer primitive camping (2-4 mile hike in) and you won't likely have too many other campers but you won't find a backpack in Texas until Big Bend. I was at Enchanted Rock late last month and there was only one other primitive camper.

Oh, cool, I was wondering about that. Are you able to start a fire pit?

Yes, fires in pits were allowed at walk-in camping areas but call ahead about primitive. My vote is for Pedernales Falls State Park. The primitive camping is secluded and the park had awesome trails to hike. There may not be much of a river there now, but it's a great park nonetheless.

As of 12/01/2011:

12/01/2011 - The Park is currently allowing campfires but conditions are still very dry & fire restrictions are being reevaluated on a daily basis. Visitors should contact the Park directly for the most recent information.

Cool, thanks for the suggestions. Pedernales was at the top of my list, and now Enchanted is there too. I'll have to decide between the two. They both look great.

Try the Government Canyon State Natural Area in San Antonio. The have several hiking trails. I think you will enjoy it here.
