Carbine in the car

#1

Post by steve817 »

In another post TAM brought this up and I didn't want to hijack the thread. This is something I have often thought about but didn't feel like I really had the means of securing one. Locked in the the trunk doesn't really fit my definition of secure. Are there other options out there?

Locked in a box that's locked in the trunk and bolted to its side? The problem is that unless you're in an old-school caddy there won't be enough room in the back seat. The only place left other than the trunk that might have space for it is the engine compartment, depending on how tight things are packed. Even if there's room, it's not very practical considering where most hood releases are located. You'd certainly have the element of surprise, though.

I want two of the two gun racks for both my truck and suburban, but my wife doesn't like the idea of one messing up the overhead space in her suburban so i guess I'll just get one for the truck right now and continue to keep the carbine under the middle seat of suburban until I convince her otherwise. LOL.

This, MAG locks with key override.
I can tell you a M4 fits un noticed in a locked Mustang trunk, to the point several LEO's have looked casually and not seen it (friends of mine, not during a real stop) It also fits under the front edge of the rear seat, to the point it can not be seen from the out side, and more then one person has sat in the back, and not know it was there until it was pointed out there was an M4 behind their feet.

Bought a couple of those single gun Big Sky and a couple of those shotgun locks a while back for next to nothing based on a tip from someone on here. If you can find a used one, Big Sky will rebuild the whole thing (new lock, new mechanism, repainted, new felt lining) for $1 per. It'll cost more to ship, but you basically get a new one back.

Noticing that you have Arlington as your place of residence makes me wonder why you feel that having a carbine in your car would be of value. Personally unless your an LEO, if I was in my car my handgun and the gas pedal would get me out of virtually any situation that I would encounter. care to explain a bit more?

I thought one of the main reasons we have CHLs and carry is that violent crime can happen anywhere.

Thats also true when it comes to terrorism. You could even make a good argument that a terrorist attack is more likely to happen in a nice neighborhood. Think about it. Terrorists are evil but they're not stupid. Are they going to get more press attacking Rodeo Drive or South Central? Did the terrorists attack the slums in Mumbai or the upscale areas?

Terrorist attacks are typically geared toward high profile targets. Blowing up my local Target store is not likely to get the same response as knocking down the high rise towers or blowing up embassies. So no, there is no chance in heck that a terrorist attack requiring response by an armed citizen with a rifle is going to happen on American soil. The Chinese Red Army is not going to come over the hill in Arlington Texas. That is just paranoid!

On the other hand... if you want to make an argument that a nut case may start walking around randomly blasting folks and an armed citizen with a rifle "MIGHT" be able to stop the attack, I would have trouble saying that couldn't happen. One thing to remember before you run to your trunk and grab your favorite rifle. You then become a target! Both of the bad guy and the responding police(who have no idea who is who when they arrive).

Pretty good reson. If someone would have been armed with a medium to high powered carbine perhaps 18 innocent people would not have been shot.

That's true. If police are responing to an active shooter call and you're carrying a rifle and not in a police uniform, there's a good chance the cops will assume you're the active shooter.

Bad example. Pure speculation to say what "could have happened". Besides, those guys were shot with everything from high powered rifles to handguns and kept right on going. An armed citizen trying to play batman would have simply increased the innocent killed count to 19.

Something like this example might be a more appropriate link for what actually happens. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tyler_courthouse_shooting" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Mark Allen Wilson tried to intervene and succeeded in doing nothing more than losing his life.
