YMCA

When I first got my CHL in September of last year, like everyone else, I started to become more aware of 30.06 signs. The YMCA where we are members has such a sign. I even talked to the head of my branch about it and he said it was an insurance issue from corporate. Since then, though, I've been trying to find a way to get exercise another way. Things finally worked out and I cancelled my membership last week. When the girl who did the exit interview asked why I was cancelling, I turned and pointed at the sign and said, "That sign that makes me give up my personal protection and advertises to criminals that only unarmed, law abiding citizens are inside. I don't feel safe here." She looked pretty shocked!

One less place I have to go unarmed!

Nicely done!

My wife still gives me "the look" when I say that there are places I don't want to go to, because I cannot carry, but oh well, she'll get over that as well (and she has her CHL, but never ever has carried in over a year!)

The YMCA has become one of the most liberal institutions in America. They stopped keeping score in youth sports, they quit using the term Indian Guides, they have taken the "C" out of their signage and print materials, and now this.

It's sad...I have a YMCA Sr. Director certification and spent a lot of time in that business early in my professional career. I hate to see a great organization succumb to political correctness and Chicago politics.

I thought they changed their name to just "The Y" a few years ago.

What percentage of the businesses posting these signs are doing so for insurance reasons? Some are run by the anti's, the Brady bunch et al., of course.

Are there any insurance underwriters who can explain what that coverage/exclusion is worth in terms of premium?

I can see that being a factor. Your insurance carrier says "we exclude liability if you allow guns on the premises. To buy an endorsement to delete that exclusion costs $xxx, xxxxx. per year." Some bean counter looks at it and says, why should the shareholders pay for this?
Luckily, I have enough willpower to control the driving ambition that rages within me.

IRC, There was a post where someone said it the 30.06 posting isn't stipulated in one place's insurance agreement, where the proprietor said it was "for insurance". I'm not sure my Google-fu is good enough to dig that topic out. I forgot though, how the poster said he knew it wasn't part of the insurance, however he did say he was under the impression that businesses just say that for the easy out.

IIrc, the local y shops on the open market for its insurance coverage. When I worked there 15 us ago, the y was a bottoms up organization where the local board was in ultimate control on most issues. If they lose enough members, they might start shopping.

We shopped around for new insurance for the house, cars, motorcycle, and my wifes business. Since I am a pert owner of her shop, I had to be there too. Even though she has a dog grooming shop, she has 2 gun related signs posted. The 1st is in the window and it says "Protected by the 2nd Ammendment". and the other is posted at the check in counter and says "We don't call 911".

When the insurance agent came to visit with us he walked by both of them and sayed he wished he could post sighns like that but his boss would not let him. I asked if it would be a problem with our coverage that we allowed CHL holders inside and he stated no, not with the company we were going with (Hartford). He also said that most companies did not have a problem but there are a few that will not write a policy unless you prohibit weapons. He also stated that he would not sell a policy from any of those companies.

One of the areas I manage where I work is insurance purchases and related risk management issues. And we are pretty serious about it, as our annual insurance costs are about $1 MM per year. Posting signs on our properties has never even entered the discussion and we put the business out for bid every year. Personally, I think the businesses that respond they were required by their insurance company are simply telling a convenient lie.

Interesting - I've been in a number of Y's in the Fort Worth-east to Carollton area, and none of the Y's I've been in are posted. Must be a southern thing. ;-)

Thanks your your replies. About a year ago, they changed their name to "The Y" and made kind of a big deal about it. It didn't occur to me that they were removing the word Christian. In my naivte, I was thinking it was the M...not just for men. It all makes sense, now.

Mr. Greene noted, “In all my years of writing commercial insurance for businesses, schools, churches, and the like, I have never had an underwriting questionnaire ask or even allude to whether or not the insured allows CHL holders to carry on the premises. I inquired of my underwriters, and not one indicated that this had ever been an underwriting question.”
I believe the basic political division in this country is not between liberals and conservatives but between those who believe that they should have a say in the personal lives of strangers and those who do not.
